It’s probably been coming but Elon Musk just deleted another piece of X’s history. The platform has suspended the @twitter handle, replacing its profile with a standard notice saying that the account violated the app’s rules.
Twitter was, of course, the social platform’s old name, which changed to X after Musk bought it for $44 billion. The account remained on the site, however, even though it wasn’t active.
Now, the handle has been deactivated. Users who looked for @twitter on Sunday were greeted with a black screen and a notification saying “Account suspended.” Allegedly the account was suspended for violating X’s rules.
A day later, however, a new notification already said that the Twitter account was “no longer active.”
It seems that X has now taken a final step in erasing Twitter’s remnants: on the account, there’s no appeal option typical for active profiles. Neither X nor Musk – who typically spends his time on the platform praising ICE and ridiculing the so-called “woke” agenda – have provided an official comment about the update.
Musk explained the name change in 2023, saying: “The Twitter name made sense when it was just 140 character messages going back and forth – like birds tweeting – but now you can post almost anything, including several hours of video.”
Twitter was acquired by X Corp both to ensure freedom of speech and as an accelerant for X, the everything app. This is not simply a company renaming itself, but doing the same thing.

The Twitter name made sense when it was just 140 character messages going back and forth – like…
The billionaire has long been obsessed with the letter X. Musk was the CEO of X.com in the late 90s before it was renamed PayPal, and he currently runs two other firms featuring X in the name – SpaceX and xAI.
The latter isn’t doing so well. According to documents obtained by Bloomberg, xAI recorded a net loss of $1.46 billion over the third quarter of 2025.
That’s an even worse loss than in previous months. In the first quarter of 2025, for instance, xAI’s net loss was around $1 billion, and the company burned $7.8 billion in cash over the last year.

Besides, xAI’s chatbot Grok is facing increasing scrutiny for generating explicit images of women and children, and doing nothing about it.
Musk keeps raging against “censorship” but Grok has already restricted its image generation feature to paying subscribers only.
This means that the vast majority of platform users cannot create images using Grok. Those who can have their full details and credit card information stored by X, so they can be identified if the function is misused.
