Mozilla is experimenting with a two-week update cycle for Firefox
AI is accelerating the race between hackers and defenders.

By Cybernews.
- Mozilla will release Firefox updates every two weeks starting September – the change doubles the update frequency from monthly to biweekly, with Firefox 155 launching September 1st.
- The time between discovering a security flaw and hackers exploiting it is getting shorter, forcing faster patch releases.
- Mozilla says features won't be rushed and the two-week cycle will be monitored to see if adjustments are needed.
- Microsoft recently announced similar plans to increase Windows security updates as AI helps defenders find more issues faster.

Mozilla, the developer of the Firefox web browser, continues to roll out updates. Starting this September, the web browser will no longer be updated once a month, but once every two weeks.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is advancing so quickly that the window between discovering a vulnerability and patching it before it can be exploited is shrinking.
Most tech companies, including Mozilla, are adjusting to this new reality.
As of writing, the San Francisco-based company releases an update for its web browser once a month. But that’s going to change.
Starting in September 2026, Mozilla plans to release updates every 2 weeks instead of every 4.
“The goal is to give work that is ready to ship more frequent opportunities to reach users, while making the release process more predictable and reducing pressure on uplifts,” Director of Engineering Sylvestre Ledru states.
However, this doesn’t mean that patching needs to be done in half the time.
“Work that is not ready should not be rushed, and features can still take the time they need to bake,” Ledru explains.
The first update to be released according to the new release cadence is Firefox 155. This version will be rolled out on September 1st, instead of September 15th.

Mozilla can’t say for sure whether updates will be released every 2 weeks. Ledru says this is an experiment and that it will be monitored closely to see how the change works in practice and to see if any changes are needed.
In addition, only Firefox desktop and Firefox Android will be updated every 2 weeks.
Mozilla isn’t the only company that’s speeding up its update process. Last week, Microsoft promised to release patches more often to better protect Windows users.
“As AI helps defenders discover more issues, customers will see a higher volume of security updates included in each security release. This is evidence that defenders are getting better at identifying and addressing issues. Our focus is to effectively utilize these AI tools to support faster protection, stronger engineering systems, and more actionable guidance for customers,” Pavan Davuluri, Executive Vice President Windows and Devices at Microsoft, explained.
