Swiss cow and calf dead after ransomware attack on milking robot

A ransomware attack on a Swiss farmer’s computer systems left milking robots offline and prevented access to vital cattle data, leading to the death of the calf and its mother.

Hackers demanded $10,000 to decrypt the data, but the farmer from Hagendorn, Zug, did not give in to the demands after some consideration, according to Agrarheute.

The milking robots continued to work without a network connection, however, the farmer could no longer receive the data.

Due to the inability to monitor pregnant animals, the farmer was unable to identify the emergency situation in time. One calf died in the womb. The farmer tried to save the cow, but, unfortunately, it was too late, and the cow had to be put down.

The monetary attack cost totaled over $7,000 due to the veterinary costs and the price of the new computer. However, according to the report, the cybercriminals left empty-handed.
