Ukraine claims it stole 4GB of secret data from Russian aviation giant Tupolev

Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) claims it carried out a successful cyberattack on Tupolev, a leading Russian company developing strategic bombers for the military.

The cyber corps of Ukraine’s Military Intelligence reportedly obtained 4.4GB of secret data. Hackers also defaced the website of Tupolev with an image of an owl holding a Russian bomber in its claws.

The stolen data includes official correspondence of the company’s management, personal data of the Tupolev personnel, including home addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, resumes of engineers and designers, procurement records, and protocols from closed-door meetings.

Local publication hromadske.ua shared screenshots of some leaked documents confirming the claims.

Tupolev is a division of the United Aircraft Company (UAC), a Russian aerospace and defence company headquartered in Moscow. Tupolev is a successor to the Soviet Tupolev Design Bureau.

The company, involved in numerous defense sectors, has designed over 100 models and produced more than 18,000 aircraft. Tupolev has been under Western sanctions since 2022.

A source within the intelligence community told the Kyiv Post that the data is very valuable and Tupolev’s operations have virtually no secrets left – Ukraine has comprehensive information on individuals involved in Russia's strategic aviation.

Ukrainian operatives were allegedly silently tracking Tupolev’s internal document flow in real-time for an extended period, which exposed internal processes and other information that could be used in the future.
