Microsoft is slowly moving forward with its controversial Recall feature

The feature, which caused quite a commotion when it was first announced, will be available for beta testing in October.

Two months after announcing that its Recall feature, which takes screenshots of all a user's activities to answer queries, is being delayed, Microsoft is bringing the feature to its Windows Insiders program.

“As previously shared on June 13th, we have adjusted our release approach to leverage the valuable expertise of our Windows Insider community prior to making Recall available for all Copilot+ PCs”, the company said in a blog post.

The company didn’t specify when the feature might be available for the general public.

Microsoft first introduced Recall at its Build conference in May and planned to make it a default option on all Copilot+ PCs.

However, soon after launch, security researchers started sounding the alarm. Many found serious security issues, including the ability to access Recall data without administrator privileges and malware targeting users' data.

Recall also drew attention from regulators, with the UK's Information Commissioner's Office starting an investigation.

After the backlash, Microsoft said it would change Recall from default to opt-in and make it available only by using Windows Hello.
