China adds its flying motorcycle to the list of vehicles that can fly.
Kuickwheel, a Chinese-based technology company, has launched a motorcycle called the Skyrider X6. Its name gives a hint to why this vehicle is different from your average motorcycle – it can fly.
The motorcycle is already available for pre-order via Chinese websites, such as JD.com. The transportation costs around 498,800 yuan ($69,000).
The flying motorcycle has not two, but three wheels and can operate in two modes. With the first mode on, the vehicle can operate on the ground, while the second mode allows it to fly, reminding of a drone with an electric motor.
When on the ground, the motorcycle can reach a top speed of 43.5 mph (70 kph) and a maximum range of 124 miles (200 kilometers).
When in air, the vehicle can reach the maximum speed of 44.7 mph (72 kph). The motorcycle uses a 6-axis, 6-rotor electric system, reports Interesting Engineering.
The bike comes with either a 10.5 kWh battery or 21 kWh battery. With the first variant, the battery can be charged in around one hour or to 80% capacity in half an hour. The 21 kWh battery provides passengers with 40 minutes of flight time or a 21-mile (50 km) range.
Skyrider X6 can be controlled mechanically as well as take off or land automatically.
The vehicle is considered to be lightweight since it’s made from carbon fibre composites and aviation-grade aluminum alloy.
The motorcycle's features include backup motors and control systems. To ensure passenger security, the vehicle has a ballistic parachute and backup flight control logic.
It’s been estimated that the operating costs of Skyrider X6 could be 3 yuan (around $0.41) per km in flight mode. An annual maintenance of the vehicle could cost around 20,000 to 30,000 yuan ($2,800 to $4,200).
While already available for pre-order, the motorcycle is far from being used by the masses. The company will have to think of how its vehicle will operate in China, where low-altitude civilian airspace (<200m) isn't entirely legal, as well as users getting a light-sport aircraft licence, which costs around 50,000 yuan (around $6,900).
