A software developer in New York learned that he was being broken up with via text. What he didn’t expect was a brutal summary of the breakup from Apple Intelligence.
“Yes, this was real, and yes, it happened yesterday. Yes, it was my birthday,” the guy said.
Depending on your situation, breakups can be brutal or, in rare cases, harmonious and mutual. But to me, an objectively bad breakup is one that has been done via text message.
What’s even worse is an artificial intelligence feature summarizing text messages from your significant other detailing the reasons why they don’t see a future with you in ten words.
“No longer in a relationship; wants belongings back from the apartment.”
Yes, this is real. It was received by New York-based independent software developer Nick Spreen, whose post about the breakup garnered 3.6 million views on X.
The post reads: “For anyone who’s wondered what an Apple Intelligence summary of a breakup text looks like.”

To add insult to injury, Spreen received two texts detailing the breakup and the Apple summary on his birthday. Ouch.
Ars Technica, which first reported the story, reached out to Spreen to ask about the content of the breakup messages.
Spreen gave his own summary, which was along the lines of, "I can’t believe you, we’re done, and I want my stuff." Apparently, the couple had an argument at the bar. Spreen left and then received the text.
Spreen’s original post received nearly 200 comments, with some users questioning whether he posted her real name on X. However, Spreen confirmed that this was just a nickname used by him.
After going viral on X, Spreen said he didn’t usually use the platform to share personal news. Instead, he, as an indie app developer, uses it to share his professional achievements.
Apple Intelligence in beta has been available in the US for a while, and users have encountered various bugs and issues with the feature. However, Apple may be finally done fixing its bugs and is planning to release its fully functional AI feature on October 28th for those in the US.
However, Reddit users previously observed Apple Intelligence bugs after the AI feature was reportedly prioritizing phishing emails.
