Meta prepares fourth AI division restructuring in six months

Meta is planning its fourth restructuring of artificial intelligence (AI) efforts in six months to streamline operations, according to a report from Reuters.

Citing a report by The Information, Reuters says that Meta is expected to divide its fresh AI unit, Superintelligence Labs, into four groups: a new "TBD Lab”; a products team including the Meta AI assistant; an infrastructure team; and the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) lab focused on long-term research.

Meta has already reorganized its AI efforts under Superintelligence Labs in a move that was poorly received, marking senior staff departures.

Experts suggest that the overhaul signals the challenges of scaling AI infrastructure, especially since advances in the field happen extremely often.

The restructuring seems to be aligned with Zuckerberg’s vision of “superintelligence for everyone,” with Meta noticing glimpses of AI systems improving themselves, which could mean that “developing superintelligence is now in sight.”

“Meta's vision is to bring personal superintelligence to everyone. We believe in putting this power in people's hands to direct it towards what they value in their own lives,” Zuckerberg said.

In July, Zuckerberg pledged hundreds of billions of dollars to build several massive AI data centers for superintelligence.

Earlier this year, Zuckerberg said he expects this to be the year when a highly intelligent and personalized AI assistant reaches more than a billion people. He added that he is expecting Meta AI to be the leading AI assistant, claiming that it already outperforms all other assistants in terms of how often it’s used.

"I also expect that 2025 will be the year when it becomes possible to build an AI engineering agent with coding and problem-solving abilities equivalent to a good mid-level engineer," Zuckerberg said, stressing its potential to be "a profound milestone and potentially one of the most important innovations in history."
