Kill switch: Firefox confirms it will soon allow users to disable all AI features

Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, the new CEO of Mozilla Corporation, has confirmed that Firefox users will soon be able to completely disable all AI features within the browser. That’s good news for the community, tired of having AI pushed down their throats.

A lot of long-time Firefox users were really unhappy when Mozilla announced in September that the new Firefox version would be integrating new AI features into the browser.

The users, who value Firefox precisely because it has usually focused on speed, privacy, and open standards, declared that the privacy-focused browser has forgotten its identity.

“Stop forcing AI on users,” one of the community members posted, and Tor Browser soon decided to cut Mozilla AI features and branding in the name of privacy, saying that the machine learning systems are inherently un-auditable from a security and privacy standpoint.

Now, it looks like Mozilla has heard them. The team has revealed it will include the option to disable all AI features within the browser, calling the functionally the “AI kill switch” internally.

This was confirmed by Firefox developer Jake Archibald on Mastodon. He said: “We've been calling it the AI kill switch internally. I'm sure it'll ship with a less murderous name, but that's how seriously and absolutely we're taking this.”

According to Archibald, all AI features, whenever they arrive on Firefox, will be opt-in. “That’s unambiguous,” he reiterated.

“My job is not to ignore one group to serve another. It is to make Firefox work for everyone without losing its core values. Rest assured, Firefox will always remain a browser built around user control,” he wrote.

“That includes AI. You will have a clear way to turn AI features off. A real kill switch is coming in Q1 of 2026.”

Firefox 147 is scheduled to be released on January 13th, 2026. It remains to be seen whether the ability to disable AI features in the browser once and for all will already be on offer.
