Elon Musk, the CEO of xAI, has warned that using the AI assistant Grok to create or post illegal content will result in consequences.
The warning has come days after female users complained about xAI’s Grok responding to user prompts asking to “undress” them in photos.
A user, Samantha Smith, posted two pictures of herself on X – the authentic one, where she is wearing a dress, and an AI-generated image of her in a tiny bikini.
“How is this not illegal?” she wrote.
When prompted by a user, the Grok account posted an apology on January 1st for generating an image of two underage girls in sexualized attire based on a user's prompt, which violated ethical standards and potentially US laws on child sexual abuse material.
“It was a failure in safeguards, and I'm sorry for any harm caused. xAI is reviewing to prevent future issues,” the post reads.
Musk shared a post on Saturday that quoted himself saying that anyone using Grok to create illegal content or X to post illegal content will face consequences.
"Anyone using Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content," the post reads.
According to X rules, the platform has zero tolerance for any form of child sexual exploitation. However, users can share consensually produced and distributed adult nudity or sexual behavior if it is properly labeled and not prominently displayed.
Musk positions himself as a free speech absolutist and promised to abolish censorship on Twitter, now X, by acquiring the platform.
While he said X couldn’t “become a free-for-all hellscape where anything can be said with no consequences,” some studies show a rise in hate speech since Musk’s takeover.
