Men still can’t talk to women, thanks to AI

AI has become more than just a crutch for daters; it's become a trend, research shows.
Dating is tough, trust me. But unlike the rest of the world, I have never used AI to enhance my dating experience.
Now, more and more people are using AI to craft bios and suggest conversation starters, while bad actors are using AI to craft fake profiles and further romance scams.
The dating app Hily has conducted a study that looked at over 1,500 US daters split between Gen Z and Millennials.
Hily found that 82% of Gen Z participants and 87% of Millennials already use AI to help when online dating, while most daters (95%) said they would use the technology in the future.
How Gen Z and Millennials are using AI in dating
Gen Z and Millennials are all using AI to their advantage when it comes to dating. The first way these groups are using the technology is to craft bios and aid in conversation starters.
Women are more likely to use AI to write their bios for them, while men are more inclined to use AI to suggest conversation starters (go figure).
Hily said that American men are more message-focused when using AI, demonstrating that AI might be a good way to get the conversation off the ground for those who struggle to strike up a conversation with a potential match.
“69% of Gen Z and 74% of Millennial American daters think the use of AI in online dating makes it feel less authentic.”
Research from Hily
The same goes for Millennials, as they would much prefer to use AI to suggest topics of conversation.
On the other hand, women and Gen Z daters would much rather use AI to craft bios, perhaps signalling the attitudes towards AI for these groups.
The dating app mentioned in the study that Gen Z daters are “notably more cautious about photo manipulation than the older generation,” bringing into question authenticity when using AI for dating.
AI and authenticity in online dating
Authenticity matters when you’re dating someone, especially if it starts online. Appearances can be deceiving, and AI is only making that harder.
The popular dating app Tinder has just rolled out facial recognition tech to help identify fake and duplicate accounts due to AI.
While daters use AI to cut corners, a lot of Americans feel that using AI is inauthentic and deceptive.
Over half of American daters said they would be less attracted to a match that used AI to craft their perfect profile.
Men are even more likely (63%) to be turned off by their match if they suspect them of using AI.
Women may be a bit more lenient when it comes to using AI. However, over half of the women surveyed said they’d be turned off if they thought a profile was created with the help of AI.
Is our reliance on AI making real-life connections impossible?
While a lot of people surveyed said they have already used AI to help when online dating, AI is actually making daters more insecure regarding real life dates.
Around 65% of Men and Millennials would feel insecure about going on an actual date after using AI.
As these demographics were most likely to use AI to help strike up conversations, it may be that men and millennials struggle talking to their matches without the aid.
However, it’s not just men and Millennials, as women and Gen Z daters (around 54%) would also feel less confident about meeting people in real life after using AI.
