Best eSIM providers and plans for Malaysia in 2025

From crystal blue waters and pristine beaches to the breathtaking skyline of Kuala Lumpur, there’s a lot to see and experience in Malaysia. However, staying connected while traveling across the country can be a challenge. That’s why many travelers choose eSIMs.

eSIMs are digital SIM cards that provide internet access and allow you to make calls and send SMS. Using an eSIM is considerably cheaper than paying roaming charges and offers unmatched flexibility compared to traditional SIM cards. For example, with an eSIM, you can easily switch carriers for better connectivity in different parts of Malaysia.

It’s a no-brainer that eSIMs are the best option for travelers to Malaysia, but which eSIM has the best coverage and prices? Well, that’s what I sought to find out. I partnered with the Cybernews research team to conduct tests and identify the best eSIMs for Malaysia. Keep reading to see which eSIMs emerged at the top of my list.

Best 5 eSIM providers for Malaysia – our shortlist

What to consider when choosing the best eSIM for Malaysia?

There are many eSIM providers offering plans for Malaysia. But not every eSIM is well suited to your needs. Here are some things to consider when choosing an eSIM for Malaysia to ensure you’re getting the best pick for your trip:

  • Coverage. Coverage is everything. You can’t use an eSIM in Malaysia if it doesn’t have coverage in the country. Therefore, you must confirm that the eSIM provider you’ve chosen has coverage in Malaysia — not just in big cities but also in faraway islands and other remote areas.
  • Data plans. Think carefully before choosing a data plan. eSIM providers offer fixed, unlimited, and pay-as-you-go data plans. If you choose a fixed plan, estimate how much data you’ll need during your trip and choose an eSIM plan that offers more than enough data. Ensure there’s an option to top up if you run out of data during your travels.
  • Cost. The cost of eSIM plans varies from provider to provider, but the cheapest plan isn’t always the best option. Before making a pick, I recommend comparing plans and prices from different providers. Also, ensure that the eSIM plan you choose has all the features you need, such as support for phone calls and SMS messaging.
  • Calls and SMS. Most eSIMs offer data-only plans. This means they don’t give you a phone number for calls and SMS. A handful of eSIMs support calling and SMS messaging. If you’d like to make calls in Malaysia, pick an eSIM that offers a phone number for calls and SMS.
  • Compatibility. Before purchasing a data plan, ensure your device is compatible with eSIMs. Most phones released after 2018 support eSIMs, but it’s best to confirm that your device is compatible with the eSIM you want to use.
  • Installation and activation process. Installing and activating an eSIM is generally easy, provided you have clear instructions from the eSIM provider. Otherwise, it can be unnecessarily complicated. Before buying a data plan, I suggest checking how the eSIM is installed and ensuring the provider has clear instructions for its installation and activation.
  • Validity period. Most eSIM plans have a validity period, meaning they can expire when their validity elapses. Consider the length of your trip and choose an eSIM plan that will last throughout your travels. Also, check how many days you have to activate your eSIM after buying a plan.

The best eSIMs for Malaysia travel – our detailed list

I worked with the Cybernews research team to assess different eSIM services and rank the best eSIMs for Malaysia. We evaluated the coverage, price, activation process, data plans, and features of each eSIM before ranking them. Now, let’s delve into more detail and explore the best Malaysia eSIMs!

1. Saily – overall best eSIM for Malaysia in 2025

Saily esim banner
Coverage:200+ countries, including Malaysia
Supports 5G:Yes
Regional plans:Yes

Saily is an affordable and reliable eSIM for Malaysia. It offers various data plans for travelers visiting the country. Whether you’re attending a business event, holidaying, or backpacking, Saily has several suitable eSIM plans.

Data plans. Saily has local, regional, and global plans for travelers to Malaysia. Its local plans come with 1GB to 20GB of data and are valid for 7 to 30 days. Its regional plans for Asia offer up to 100GB and are valid for up to 180 days. While its global plans give you a maximum of 20GB of data, it’s valid for up to a year, making this an excellent option for long-term travel — although the limited data allowance may be an issue.

Coverage. Saily is available in more than 200 countries, including Malaysia. This eSIM provider doesn’t disclose which local network providers it works with. However, it promises 3G, 4G, LTE, or 5G speeds in Malaysia, depending on your location and the carrier you’re connected to.

Activation process. One of the things I love about Saily is its straightforward installation and activation. All you need to do is download the Saily app from Google Play or the Apple App Store. Then, sign up and purchase a data plan. Once you’re ready to set it up, click the activate button and follow the on-screen instructions. The whole process takes about 10 minutes.

You’ll need internet access to install your Saily eSIM, so I recommend setting it up a day or two before your trip and activating it when you land in Malaysia. This eSIM doesn’t have any identity verification requirements.

Customer support. If you encounter any issues setting up or using this eSIM, you can contact Saily’s customer support staff 24/7 via the in-app live chat service or email at [email protected]. Saily’s customer support team typically responds to messages quickly. When I reached out via live chat, I received timely assistance from the team.

Price. Saily is one of the most cost-efficient eSIMs on this list. Its eSIM plan for Malaysia starts from $3.99 for 1GB of data, valid for 7 days.

2. Airalo – popular Malaysia eSIM with a wide selection of plans

Airalo banner

Airalo is a trusted eSIM brand with coverage in over 200 countries, including Malaysia. It offers a wide selection of data plans for travelers and is one of the few eSIMs that supports calling and SMS worldwide.

Airalo stands out because it has different types of global plans, dubbed Discover and Discover+. Airalo’s Discover plans are valid for up to a year and come with a maximum of 20GB of data. Its Discover+ plans have the same allocated data and validity period but come with a phone number for making calls and sending SMS messages.

Coverage. Airalo is available in more than 200 countries worldwide. In Malaysia, it works with Maxis and supports 4G speeds. While Airalo supports 5G internet in other countries, it doesn’t currently offer 5G in Malaysia.

I recommend the app-based installation method because it’s mostly automated. You simply need to download the app, buy a data plan, and click activate. It’s that simple. Airalo doesn’t have any KYC requirements for its Malaysia eSIM.

Customer support. Airalo has a 24/7 live chat service on its website and app, which I found reliable. You can also contact its customer support team via email at [email protected].

Coverage. Jetpac has the smallest coverage of all the providers on our list — 200+ countries. However, it boasts excellent coverage in Malaysia, where it works with Maxis and supports 4G and 5G speeds.

Activation process. Jetpac supports QR-based eSIM installation, which is quite simple. Start by installing the Jetpac app from Google Play or Apple’s App Store. Data plans. Nomad has various local data plans for Malaysia, offering 1GB to 50GB and valid for 7 to 30 days. This eSIM has a higher data limit for its local Malaysia plans than other providers on this list.

6. GigSky – best Malaysia eSIM for fixed and unlimited data plans

GigSky banner
Coverage:200+ countries, including Malaysia
Supports 5G:Yes
Regional plans:Yes

GigSky has data plans for every traveler, whether you’re on a cruise, flight, or land. It offers both unlimited and fixed data plans to accommodate the needs of different users. Plus, new users get 100MB for free. If you’re looking for a flexible eSIM for Malaysia, this is an excellent pick.

Data plans. GigSky has an array of local, regional, and global data plans for travelers to Malaysia. You can opt for a fixed or unlimited data plan. Its local fixed plans come with 1GB to 10GB of data and are valid for 7 to 30 days. It also has fixed regional plans for the Asia Pacific region, offering 1GB to 50GB and valid for 7 to 30 days.

Are you also traveling to other parts of the world? GigSky has a 5GB, global plan that’s valid for 30 days. It even has plans for cruises traveling in the Asia Pacific region and other parts of the world.

Unfortunately, this eSIM provider only offers fixed and unlimited local plans for Malaysia; it doesn’t have unlimited regional or global plans. It’s worth noting that the speeds of its unlimited data plans will slow down after you use 2.5GB daily. However, your internet speed will be reset the next day.

Coverage. GigSky has coverage in over 200 countries. This eSIM provider doesn’t disclose which local network providers it works with in Malaysia. You can expect 5G speeds from your GigSky eSIM in most parts of Malaysia. However, you may get 3G or 4G speeds in some regions.

Activation process. It only takes a few clicks to install and activate this eSIM. GigSky will email you a QR code when you buy a data plan. Simply scan the code to install the eSIM profile on your device and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the process. 7. Holafly – best eSIM for unlimited data in Malaysia

Holafly banner
Coverage:200+ countries, including Malaysia
Supports 5G:Yes
Regional plans:Yes

Holafly is undoubtedly the best eSIM provider if you want unlimited data during your travels in Malaysia. Another thing I like about this provider is that it allows you to purchase multiple eSIMs simultaneously if you are traveling with a group.

Data plans. Holafly offers local eSIMs for Malaysia as well as regional eSIMs that work in Malaysia and other Asian countries. It even has a global eSIM that works in 113 countries. However, Holafly doesn’t offer fixed plans. Instead, it lets you customize your plans based on the duration of your trip — 1 to 90 days. You get unlimited data daily. I love that Holafly doesn’t throttle your speeds like GigSky and other providers.

Holafly is a data-only eSIM service, so you can only use Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) apps like FaceTime and WhatsApp to make calls and send text messages. Holafly limits data sharing to 500MB per day, so it’s best to get separate eSIMs if you’re traveling with friends or family.

Coverage. Holafly has coverage in over 200 countries. It works with Maxis, Celcom, and DigiMaxis to guarantee consistent coverage across Malaysia. Depending on your location, you can expect 3G, 4G, LTE, or 5G speeds from this eSIM. Holafly generally works best in cities in Malaysia, compared to more remote areas.

Activation process. Like Jetpac, Holafly will email you a QR code when you purchase a data plan. You need to scan the QR code to install the eSIM on your device and follow the on-screen instructions to activate it. The process is very straightforward and takes only a few minutes.

Customer support. Holafly provides customer support 24/7 via live chat, WhatsApp, and email ([email protected]). You can expect a prompt response when you contact its team via live chat or WhatsApp.

Price. Holafly’s plans for Malaysia start from $6.90 for unlimited data per day. While it’s more expensive than other eSIMs on this list, Holafly offers unlimited data, so its price is fair.

8. Roamless – best pay-as-you-go eSIM for Malaysia

roamless banner
Coverage:195+ countries, including Malaysia
Supports 5G:Yes
Regional plans:Yes

Roamless is unlike any other eSIM I’ve ever tested. This pay-as-you-go service works automatically in all the countries where the provider has coverage; you don’t have to re-activate it again. Plus, Roamless’ plans don’t expire. This means you can use the eSIM balance from your last trip to continue browsing the next time you’re abroad.

Data plans. Roamless is one of my favorite eSIMs, thanks to its flexibility. This is a pay-as-you-go eSIM. Instead of fixed plans, you simply load money into your Roamless wallet and browse; you only pay for what you use. Since this eSIM works automatically in every country it operates, Roamless doesn’t have local, regional, or global plans.

Roamless gives you more than data; it also supports in-app phone calls to 200+ destinations worldwide.

Coverage. Roamless’ eSIM works in more than 195 countries worldwide. It partners with Maxis in Malaysia and supports 4G speeds in the country.

Activation process. The Roamless app makes it easy to install and activate your eSIM. Simply download the app, purchase a data plan, and click “Activate Now” to initiate the installation. You’ll then be directed to change some settings on your device to complete the installation and activation. The whole process can be completed in under 5 minutes.

Customer support. You can contact Roamless’ customer support team via phone or email ([email protected]). If you contact the company via email, I recommend using the same email address you used to register your account for a faster response.

Price. Roamless’ prices for Malaysia start at $6.45 for 1GB of data. As indicated above, Roamless’ plans don’t expire, so if you don’t exhaust your data balance, you can use it on your next trip. Roamless charges $0.01 per minute for calls.

9. Instabridge – cheap Malaysia eSIM with fixed and pay-as-you-go plans

Instabridge banner
Coverage:190+ countries, including Malaysia
Supports 5G:Yes
Regional plans:Yes

Instabridge is one of the most affordable eSIMs for Malaysia on this list, so it’s a good choice if you’re trying to cut costs. In addition to its eSIM service, Instabridge offers a free Wi-Fi map and data-saving browser, available as separate apps.

Data plans. Instabridge offers fixed and pay-as-you-go plans for travelers to Malaysia. It has a relatively small number of fixed plans — just 4 — offering 1GB to 20GB of data and valid for 7 to 30 days. If you’re traveling to Malaysia for a long time and want a wide variety of fixed plans to choose from, Instabridge may not be the best eSIM for you.

In addition to its local plans, Instabridge has regional and global plans for Asia that cover Malaysia. All of Instabridge’s plans have the same allocated data and validity period.

Coverage. Instabridge provides internet connectivity in over 190 countries. In Malaysia, it works with DiGi and Celcom. Depending on your location in the country and the carrier you're connected to, you can expect 3G, 4G, LTE, or 5G speeds from your Instabridge eSIM.

Activation process. Instabridge has a user-friendly app that makes it easy to set up and use this eSIM. You only need to click “activate” on the app to install the eSIM profile on your device. You may need to tweak the settings on your device during the process. Once it’s set up, simply set the eSIM as your main source of cellular data and turn on data roaming to activate it. You’ll be connected to the internet once you arrive in Malaysia.

Customer support. Instabridge doesn’t have a live chat or phone number to reach its customer service staff. Instead, you need to fill out a form on its website. I received a response within 24 hours when I emailed the company’s support team.

Price. Instabridge’s fixed data plans for Malaysia start at only $3.00 for 1GB of data, valid for 7 days. Its pay-as-you-to plans for Malaysia costs $3.00 per GB.

How we tested and ranked these eSIMs for Malaysia?

I worked closely with the Cybernews research team to assess, test, and rank the best eSIMs for Malaysia. Here’s a glimpse into the criteria we used to rank these eSIMs:

Coverage:Does the eSIM have coverage across Malaysia? Does it have regional plans?
Network connection:Does it support 4G and 5G networks? Is the network reliable in different parts of the country?
User-friendliness:How user-friendly is the eSIM app? Is it easy to install and activate the eSIM?
Compatible:Is the eSIM compatible with a wide variety of iOS and Android devices?
Price:Is the eSIM reasonably priced? Does it offer good value for the money?
  • Coverage. We assessed each eSIM’s coverage in Malaysia by checking the percentage of the country their local partners have coverage of. We prioritized providers with excellent coverage in Malaysia and neighboring countries.
  • Network connection. We checked the reliability and speed of each eSIM provider’s network. We selected eSIMs that are proven to be reliable in Malaysia and support 4G, LTE, and 5G speeds in the country.
  • User-friendliness. We compared the apps of different eSIM providers and assessed their installation and activation methods. After thorough analysis, only the most user-friendly eSIMs made our list.
  • Compatibility. To avoid a situation where your eSIM is incompatible with your device, we choose eSIM providers for Malaysia that support a wide variety of iOS and Android-powered devices.
  • Price. We compared the prices of different eSIMs and their features, checking for hidden fees. The eSIMs on this list are some of the most affordable options available today.

How to activate eSIM Malaysia

There are a handful of ways to install and activate an eSIM, but the process is generally easy. I’ll briefly discuss the different ways you can set up an eSIM below:

  • App-based activation. Also known as automatic installation, this is arguably the easiest way to install and activate an eSIM. Providers like Saily, Airalo, and others support app-based activation. Basically, you need to click the “activate” button on the provider’s app to set up your eSIM.
  • QR-based activation. This is probably the most widely used eSIM activation method. With QR-based activation, you need to scan a QR code that the eSIM provider shares with you when you purchase a plan. While scanning the QR code initiates the eSIM installation process, you may still need to manually change some settings in your device.
  • Manual activation. This is the most intricate of all the eSIM installation methods. It involves manually entering the eSIM details (like the eSIM activation code and SM-DP+ address) into your device.

Note: Regardless of the activation method you choose, you still need to set the eSIM as your primary SIM card for cellular data and turn on data roaming to activate it.

All the eSIMs for Malaysia that I recommend above have detailed instructions on their respective sites to guide you through the eSIM installation and activation process. We also have guides explaining how to set up an eSIM on iPhones and Samsung devices.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Most devices released after 2018 are compatible with eSIMs. You can check if your phone supports eSIMs by reviewing its specifications or contacting your network provider. Below, I’ll briefly explain how to check if your iPhone or Samsung device is compatible with eSIMs.

eSIM compatability on iPhone

Not all iPhones are eSIM-compatible. Only the iPhone XR and the models after it work with eSIMs. So, if you have an iPhone 6S, iPhone 7, or iPhone 8, you won’t be able to use an eSIM. If the US version of the iPhone 15 is any indication of the future, Apple may eventually ditch the physical SIM card slot in favor of eSIMs.

eSIM compatability on Samsung

The Samsung S20 and later models are compatible with eSIMs. You can quickly check if Samsung Galaxy models support eSIMs by looking for “Status” or “IMEI information” in the “About Phone” or ‘Settings’ menu. You can also check your phone’s specs.

Practical use cases of eSIM in Malaysia

eSIMs are often recommended for tourists, but they can also be useful if you’re a digital nomad or on a business trip to Malaysia. Here are a few use cases for eSIMs in Malaysia:

  • Tourists. eSIMs can be especially beneficial for tourists, allowing travelers to stay connected with family and friends and navigate Malaysia easily.
  • Business travelers. If you’re on a business trip to Malaysia, an eSIM can allow you to communicate seamlessly with clients and colleagues, ensuring you can make the most out of your trip.
  • Digital nomads. An eSIM simplifies the process of staying connected for digital nomads, reducing costs and offering a more secure connectivity solution compared to traditional SIM cards.

Final thoughts on eSIMs for Malaysia

An eSIM can make traveling across Malaysia easier and more enjoyable. I recommend considering your needs closely before choosing an eSIM. Ensure the eSIM you pick has all the features you need and fits your budget.

Saily stands out among the Malaysia eSIMs I reviewed for this article thanks to its affordable prices and variety of data plans for Malaysia. But, if you want an eSIM for Malaysia that comes with a phone number, you may be better off going for Airalo or aloSIM.
