CES 2024: spatial computing, smart homes, and revolutionary pet tech

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is once again dividing audiences. Depending on your viewpoint, it either stands as a beacon of innovation or is just another tech show losing its relevance in a world dominated by a handful of big tech companies.

A perfect example of this is Apple's attempts to carefully avoid having its new product launch buried under hundreds of stories about strange gadgets that will probably never see the light of day. But unlike the gaming event E3, which reached the end of the line last year, CES 2024 has a strong enough identity to maintain its relevance.

Spatial computing

Apple's moment to shine will be in a few weeks when it releases the new Vision Pro augmented-reality headset on Feb 2nd. But right now, Sony is attempting to steal the limelight by partnering with Siemens to wow audiences in Vegas, grabbing the headlines with its high-end XR headset dubbed 'spatial content creation system.' Designed for 3D content creators and engineers, the headset blurs the line between the physical and digital worlds by enhancing collaboration and creativity in the industrial metaverse.

The partnership between Siemens and Sony is bringing the potential of spatial computing to life and revolutionizing traditional design processes. These tools aim to empower sustainable design practices and increase productivity by integrating virtual environments with Siemens' NX software.

The sales pitch of immersive engineering and collaboration in mixed reality sounds incredibly cool. Although the hype around the Metaverse has faded, in the first month of the year, the spatial computing and mixed reality race is hotting up with the usual suspects Sony, Meta, Apple, and Microsoft in pole position. But whether an industrial Metaverse is something engineers have asked for or even want is another story.

Smart homes: the fusion of technology and domestic life

Samsung's Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator, unveiled at CES 2024, epitomizes the increasing integration of AI in household appliances. This refrigerator comes with a 32-inch screen and AI Vision technology. It can even recognize 33 food items and suggest recipes based on their contents, streamlining meal preparation and reducing food waste.

The advancements in smart home technology extend to unconventional items such as voice-command bidets, like Kohler's PureWash E930. These innovations redefine the concept of home convenience and comfort, blending luxury with practicality.

In an innovative leap in home appliance technology, Eureka wants to revolutionize our daily chores by introducing the Dual Washing Bot. This smart appliance combines the functions of a laundry machine and a robot vacuum-mop into a singular, seamless unit. At the heart of this invention is the ability to wash and dry clothes with the same efficiency and convenience we've come to expect, but with an added twist. Nestled under the front-load door of the washer lies a docking station for an advanced robot vacuum.

This smart vacuum not only cleans floors but also doubles as a mop. What sets the Dual Washing Bot apart is its integrated system, which uses the washing machine's water line. This allows the robot to replenish its mopping reservoir autonomously, ensuring it is always primed for its next cleaning venture. Moreover, the base station ingeniously takes charge of the vacuum's maintenance by automatically emptying its dustbin and washing and drying its mopping pads.

Eureka's bold move towards integrating these household tasks into one device reflects a significant step in home automation, aiming to streamline our domestic routines. This ambitious project will debut through a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo later this year, marking a new era in home appliance innovation.

However, many smart home products and plastic gadgets displayed at CES contradict the current sustainability narrative. This is something the Home Connectivity Alliance's (HCA) new appliance energy management specification aims to solve. The initiative, led by Samsung and other manufacturers, aims to optimize energy use in household appliances, ultimately saving costs and fostering a more sustainable home environment.

Pet care technology: a leap forward in animal welfare?

AI-powered autonomous robots like Oro's marks a significant step in pet care. These robots not only provide company to pets during the absence of their owners but also learn and respond to signs of distress, ensuring a calmer environment for them. Elsewhere, Invoxia's Smart Dog Collar also significantly advances pet health care. This device tracks a pet's vital signs and movements, offering data for preventative care and early disease detection.

Even the humble bird table is getting a tech upgrade. Birdfy's AI-powered bird feeder and Swarovski's AI-powered binoculars transform bird watching into a high-tech hobby. These devices identify bird species and provide a way to document and share these experiences.

AI-Enhanced personal care

Technology is predictably continuing to infiltrate personal care at CES. From AI-powered baby cry translators to smart toothbrushes with AI voice tips. These innovations promise a unique blend of convenience and personalized care, albeit raising questions about the extent of technology's role in our personal lives.

The emergence of intelligent rings, like the AmazFit Helio Ring, also signifies a shift in wearable technology towards more subtle and stylish forms. But it's EssilorLuxottica's Nuance glasses that stand out for attempting to solve real-world accessibility issues with a groundbreaking innovation for people who are hard of hearing.

Privacy vs. convenience

Once again, CES provides a vision for a future where technology is deeply intertwined into every aspect of our lives, from smart homes that cater to our every need to pet care technologies that nurture our furry friends and spatial computing that further blurs the line between online and offline, these innovations promise a more efficient, sustainable, and connected future. But it’s easy to become distracted by the shiny tech on display and lose sight of the true cost of convenience.

We must consider their impact on our privacy, lifestyle, and the essence of human experience. As technology continues to evolve, it challenges us to redefine the boundaries between the digital and the physical, the functional and the personal, and ultimately, between human and machine.
