In the age of remote and hybrid work, some of us can get complacent and maybe even a little bit lazy. Employers are catching on to this work-from-home slackery and aren’t happy about it, understandably.
Employers are even installing invasive work-based surveillance software on employees' computers to monitor their presence, making it harder for them to slack off. Even the golden age of over-employment suffers under the strain of work-based surveillance.
But there are ways to deceive your boss that require some devices and nifty hacks to make you look productive.
First, you’ve got to get your hands on some things that’ll make your life easier.
Mouse jigglers
Mouse jigglers are nifty little devices that move your mouse automatically to keep your computer active and make you appear to be working.
They’re usually available in USB form or as software that you can download. But these little devices have come under much scrutiny recently when it comes to helping workers slack off.
Employers and management have begun installing software onto employees' computers that detect these devices. Your boss might want to register your keystrokes and mouse movements to determine whether you’re actually working in the office or at home.
However, there are mouse jigglers marketed as “undetectable,” but whether or not they are is a different matter.

At the time of writing, Amazon was selling various mouse jigglers on sale as a part of a “back to school deal.”
One of the cheaper mouse jigglers is a small USB that claims to be undetectable. This option is only $6 and says it’ll prevent your laptop from entering sleep mode, and no additional software is needed, just “plug-and-play.”
If you’re looking for an actual device in a higher price range, there are plenty of options. One is the TECH8 USA mouse mover, which costs about $35.
This mouse jiggler is programmed to move randomly and has been dubbed a “work-from-home essential” because it prevents your laptop from sleeping and from displaying the “away” status while on Microsoft Teams, Lync, Zoom, Skype, WebEx, and more.
If your employer uses work-based surveillance technology, it’s best to buy a mouse jiggler that you don’t plug into or isn’t downloaded onto your computer, as your boss may be able to see that you have something installed.
Auto-clicker
Similar to the mouse jiggler, you’ll need to find a device that emulates your keystrokes so your boss doesn’t become suspicious.
There are products that combine mouse and keyboard jigglers into one, but they can cost as much as $70.
However, there are auto-clickers that can make you look like you’re typing, although probably really slowly.
Amazon finds
One option on Amazon is the ‘Physical Clicker,’ a computer keyboard clicker that automatically clicks your keyboard.
It appears that it can only click one key at a time, meaning you would need to move the keyboard clicker around.
The ‘Physical Clicker’ costs $20 and claims to click your keyboard every 1 to 30 seconds, making it look random. It can also click continuously for up to two months, so you could use it as a mouse jiggler alternative.
Much like the mouse jigglers, there are more expensive versions of keyboard clickers on Amazon. The 'Physical Click Auto Keyboard Clicker’ is $50 and allows you to control the speed and frequency of your clicks.
There are different sizes and also double clickers that may make you appear like you’re typing.
Multiple monitors
If you’re in the office, multiple monitors can make you look like you’re being productive. If you keep your work documents open on one monitor you can check out social media and all other things on the separate monitor.
Depending on your preference and price range, there are hundreds of different monitors you can choose from. Unfortunately, there are no specific monitors for if you’re planning to slack off your job.
Although it’s not advised to spend your days slacking off when you should be working, work-based surveillance is making it so that people can’t take time out during office hours.
The level of productivity required, sometimes, isn’t feasible. We’re all human, and maybe you need to take some time out to recharge.
But with bosses employing software to surveil you, you’ll have to get a bit more creative when “slacking off.”
Or, if you’re juggling jobs, you most definitely need one of these devices to help you fulfill, or seem like you’re fulfilling, your duties.
