Meet Clanker, the Star Wars slur fueling an AI backlash

From Star Wars droids to TikTok memes, the slur “clanker” is the internet’s new weapon for mocking AI, robots, and the people who use them.
The internet’s favorite new slur for AI and robots – “clanker” – has recently surged in popularity, especially online.
Originally a Star Wars insult for droids, “clanker” has been revived to mock everything from humanoid robots to AI chatbots.
Social media users share jokes and memes that highlight growing frustration and fear around AI’s increasing presence in daily life.
Sci-fi fuels AI fear
Sci-fi has long painted robots as cold, mechanical, and soulless – a narrative that still shapes how people view AI today.
As much as AI has made immense leaps, especially since ChatGPT emerged in late 2022, it can still dazzle or derail at any moment.
Like when people use the term “red pill” without any forethought of The Matrix, it’s important to know where “clanker” actually originates from.
People who actually get offended by “clanker” are never not silly to me. It’s a slur invented by fucking Star Wars: The Clone War 💔 pic.twitter.com/o7CGmlHZnt

The usage could be applied to both a useless bot, or one that’s perceived as a threat.
I guess they kind of blend, especially when you factor in something like a customer-service bot, right now they may be infuriating, but down the line, might they not simply replace you?
Sick of yelling “REPRESENTATIVE” into the phone 10 times just to talk to a human being?

My new bill makes sure you don’t have to talk to a clanker if you don’t want to. pic.twitter.com/9aUv478gSP
Mock the machine, shape the future
Humans are flaming humans all the time. Lashing out is the new normal.
But when it’s a bot, it seems like an easy target and perhaps says more about the person hurling the insult.
In some TikTok videos it gets beyond a joke and actually quite aggressive, which will add fuel to a disgraced society.

But what will happen if we start getting more and more abusive?
In the latter stages of artificial general intelligence, the worst case scenario is it lashes out, and the best is, well – it will feel bad.
And, aside from getting better output from AI from using your p’s and q’s – it pays to be nice generally.
