MorphoScan Smart Body Scale review: can advanced body composition tracking improve your health insights?

Scales used to do one thing, and one thing only: show your weight. But as technology advanced, these devices started offering a deeper insight into your health. Today, smart scales can break down your body composition, sync with apps, and provide data-driven suggestions. And the MorphoScan Smart Body Scale by Renpho is supposed to be the best of them.

To check whether it lives up to the hype, my team of experts at Cybernews and I have done the research. From design and functionality to features and real-world performance, this MorphoScan Smart Body Scale review shows where this modern gadget delivers, and where it falls short.

What is the MorphoScan Smart Body Scale?

The MorphoScan Smart Body Scale is a device for tracking segmental body composition created by Renpho. Unlike standard bathroom scales, it uses Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) to analyze over 50 body metrics.

MorphoScan uses 8 electrodes to deliver low-frequency currents through the body and collect information, including body mass, muscle mass, bone mass, body water, skeletal muscle, visceral fat, metabolic age, and more.

The scale, then, sends this data to its app to give users a deeper insight into their body composition and help with fitness and personal wellness tracking. It’s meant to help with goal setting and motivation rather than offer 100% accurate results or medical diagnoses.

MorphoScan app & health tracking features

MorphoScan relies on its companion app to present all the data it’s gathered, just like other Renpho scales. The app is free to download and easy to sync with your device, whether you’re an iOS or Android user. I’ve seen some comments calling it clunky, but that’s hard to avoid with the amount of metrics it features.

MorphoScan-app

The companion app is where all the metrics come together to become trackable insights you can view at your leisure. Here are some of the features that stood out to the team and me:

  • Dual connectivity. The scale pairs with the app on your mobile device via Bluetooth, then continues to upload data over Wi-Fi. After the initial sync, the data updates automatically, so you only need to open the app when you actually want to check your progress.
  • Data visualizations. To offer a holistic view, MorphoScan presents its metrics visually. It lets you view your body composition and how it changes over time in 2D graphics, like charts, shareable reports, and a human body map with highlighted parts.
  • Multi-user profiles. This Renpho body fat scale lets you create multiple profiles, so your whole family can use it together. Each user can track their body composition, set personal goals, and follow long-term progress without worrying about data inconsistencies.
  • Progress tracking. If you use it consistently, your MorphoScan device can show changes your body has undergone over the past week, month, or year. The Trend area can help you spot patterns, whether that’s pain points or improvements.

MorphoScan design, build & display

The design was a major highlight in my MorphoScan Smart Body Scale review. While it doesn’t look much different, this scale feels a bit sturdier than other glass versions on the market, according to users. It can support up to 400lbs, and has large electrode pads, to easily collect data from your body.

The larger, LED display is also more user-friendly than the smaller, monochrome ones you see on similar smart scales. It flashes blue to red to show you it’s collecting data, and displays 7 key metrics like BMI, body fat percentage, skeletal muscle percentage, and others on the device, so you’re not entirely dependent on the app.

Another feature that sets MorphoScan apart is the retractable, sensor-equipped handle. It offers better readings of your torso and arms than base electrodes would on their own, which is something you only see in higher-end scales, like Withings or Hume.

MorphoScan setup: step-by-step guide

Another strong point I took note of during this Renpho smart scale review was its straightforward setup process. The device comes pretty much ready to go; you only need to charge it and connect it to the app.

  1. Charge the scale. The included USB-C charger plugs directly into the scale and fully charges the embedded battery in about 3 hours. Although some users have recommended leaving it plugged in overnight to help condition the battery.
  2. Download and set up the app. Getting the app on your phone should take no more than 2 minutes, after which you can launch it and create a profile.
  3. Calibrate the device. Use Bluetooth to link the app to the scale, then step onto it and pull out the handle to complete the in-app calibration. Make sure the device is on a flat, stable surface, stand on it with bare feet, and hold the retractable handle parallel to the floor. Wait for the display to tell you the weigh-in is over before you put the handle back in.
  4. Add other users. Open the Account section in the MorphoScan app, and select Add User or simply create another profile in the app. You’ll get the same functionality either way, it’s all up to what you find more convenient.

MorphoScan accuracy & real-world performance

While design, setup, and features all matter, real-world performance is what carries the most weight in every Cybernews review. The team and I focus on how a device actually behaves day-to-day, not just how it looks on paper. Unfortunately, this is where MorphoScan comes a bit short.

person using MorphoScan scale

User sentiment on the 50+ tracked metrics is largely positive, which isn’t surprising given that most competing scales stop at far fewer. The Trends section is particularly praised for offering such comprehensive long-term insights into body composition. The same can’t be said about the Renpho scale accuracy, though.

Quite a few users report not only data discrepancies between MorphoScan and other scales, but also within its own historical data, which is harder to forgive. Some also point out that the benchmarks the app uses to make conclusions and suggestions don’t come from reliable sources, such as scientific studies or journals, so they’re harder to take seriously.

One should keep in mind, however, that data accuracy complaints are pretty common among BIA devices in general. Even DEXA scans, often considered the gold standard, have recorded errors. That’s why it’s important to view all readings as estimates rather than exact measurements, whatever your fitness or wellness goals are.

User reviews & brand reputation

There’s not as much feedback on this MorphoScan smart scale as I expected, but what’s there does lean positive. Its 50+ metrics and the intuitive way they’re presented account for most of the praise my team and I have come across. Users also seem happy with the device's design and find it fairly easy to use.

Given the brand's generally positive reputation, none of this is surprising. Although I’ve seen a few mentions of minor app bugs, negative comments generally circle back to the same concern, “Are Renpho scales accurate?”

As mentioned above, users have noticed small reading fluctuations and found some fitness benchmarks questionable. But, in the grand scheme of things, it’s really nothing out of the ordinary for smart scales of this kind.

Final verdict: is the MorphoScan Smart Body Scale worth it?

My MorphoScan Smart Body Scale review has left a generally positive impression. Coming from a reputable brand, the scale entered the market with an edge over its lesser-known rivals.

An easy-to-set-up and sturdy device, a well-organized and sleek app, and 50+ tracking metrics make this device worth a try, especially at $139.99. You won’t find a better-quality, unlimited-user option at a lower price, no matter how far and wide you look.

However, if accuracy is something you’re more concerned with, go with the likes of Withings or Hume. Renpho’s scale makes more sense for users after estimates that can help track body comp trends and keep you motivated.
