Smartwatches and wristbands have been all the rage in recent years. In fact, it feels like everyone and their grandma now has one. The resulting Withings U-Scan Nutrio review delves into its design, features, nutrition strategy, packages, and user reviews to help you determine whether this product is right for you.

Our methodology
When reviewing gadgets, my colleagues at Cybernews and I apply a set of criteria that goes far beyond specification sheets. For today’s Withings U-Scan Nutrio review, that meant diving into the following aspects:
- Design and build (20%). While the U-Scan Nutrio isn’t a device you’ll be showing off, its practicality, build quality, and, most importantly, ease of maintenance are still vital.
- Features and technology (25%). We dove deep into U-Scan Nutrio’s outputs and evaluated the depth of health-related metrics it provides. Furthermore, we checked the Withings app’s integration and automation capabilities.
- Personalization (20%). From there, we also evaluated the level and quality of tailored nutrition insights U-Scan Nutrio offers as part of its personalized experience.
- User feedback (20%). Our conclusions were also based on hundreds of customer testimonials across multiple platforms. Reviewing these helped us gauge how satisfied users really are and gain insights into reported issues with the device or the company.
- Pricing and value (15%). Lastly, we examined U-Scan Nutrio’s total price, including the initial cost of hardware, cartridge replacement, and subscriptions. From there, we compared the total to its competitors to determine the device’s real value.
What is the Withings U-Scan?
Although Withings is best known for its sleek smartwatches, such as ScanWatch 2, which we recently reviewed, its U-Scan Nutrio isn’t a wrist-worn gadget. Instead, it’s a urine sensor system designed to monitor health data at home.
The hockey-puck-shaped device discreetly sits inside your toilet bowl, resembling a stylish freshener. But instead of making your porcelain throne smell nicer, it analyzes your urine and provides feedback via the Withings app.
Jokingly dubbed "a new kind of streaming device", the Withings U-Scan Nutrio is by no means a medical device. It should only ever be used for wellness and self-tracking and not in an attempt to diagnose, treat, or monitor medical conditions.
How does the Withings U-Scan Nutrio work?
Using the Withings U-Scan Nutrio is rather simple. All you’ll have to do is urinate onto the device, and it will take a small sample, while the rest will be washed away when you flush. The process is, luckily, automatic and thus sanitary.
From there, U-Scan Nutrio analyzes the urine and sends the collected data to the Withings app on your phone via Bluetooth. But what exactly does the Withings U-Scan Nutrio look at?
Well, there are 4 key metrics that it measures:
- Urine pH. While Withings calls this parameter Bio-Acidity, U-Scan Nutrio essentially tracks your pH levels, as they may reveal certain insights about your diet. Skip veggies, and your pH levels may be on the lower side; don’t eat enough animal protein (fish, meat, or cheese), and your urine pH might rise.
- Hydration. U-Scan Nutrio also checks the concentration of your urine, also known as urine specific gravity, to gauge your hydration level (HydroStatus in the app).
- Ketones. Since ketones are byproducts of ketosis, the device’s analysis of their levels is essentially intended to tell you whether your body is burning fat instead of using carbs as its primary source for energy. However, it doesn’t provide a deeper understanding of your metabolic status.
- Vitamin C. Lastly, U-Scan Nutrio analyzes your vitamin C levels. But you should keep in mind that this only reflects your recent intake of it, not your overall health.
One thing to keep in mind is that Withings hasn’t made the algorithms behind these insights public – or published any articles in scientific peer-reviewed journals on how valid their metrics – so the interpretations for these measurements should be taken with a grain of salt.
To add, there are certain medical conditions and diseases which may impact these measures. While the manufacturer states that the device shouldn’t be used for diagnosis of any disease or condition, it remains unclear whether the app warns the user if some of the metrics seem to be outside of normal ranges or are suggestive of a health concern.
The Withings U-Scan Nutrio: design
For such a peculiar device, the design of the Withings U-Scan Nutrio is rather discreet. It is relatively small, white, and round, and it very much resembles a hockey puck. It’s so unobtrusive that the only thing keeping you from forgetting it’s there is the fact that you’ll be using it every other day.
In terms of durability, Withings says U-Scan Nutrio is completely water- and splash-resistant. The reader part of it is also rated IP45, so you’re good on that end, even with all the flushing.
And as far as maintenance goes, there’s no cleaning required here, since everything gets flushed down. The only thing you’ll need to do is occasionally replace the device’s battery (once every 3 months or so) and change the cartridge every 1 to 2 months, depending on your usage.
The Withings U-Scan Nutrio: features
Although it’s a first-generation product, the Withings U-Scan Nutrio already packs a heavy punch in terms of features:
- Urine analysis. According to Withings CEO Mathieu Letombe, urine contains a ton of information about your daily health. That’s why the main feature of the U-Scan Nutrio is its ability to analyze urine and gain insights into your wellness.
- Hydration and certain nutrient intake tracking. When it comes to urine, U-Scan Nutrio measures 4 key metrics within it. Those include urinary pH balance, current vitamin C levels, and ketones, as well as your hydration levels, all of which the device then sends to the app.
- Integration with the Withings app. Speaking of the app, U-Scan Nutrio seamlessly plugs into the Withings ecosystem through the brand’s Android and iOS apps. Every piece of data the device gathers is displayed solely through said app.
- Automatic recognition of urine. U-Scan Nutrio has a thermal sensor to differentiate between toilet water and urine. Withings also claims that the device uses low-energy radars to distinguish who’s on the toilet. That said, this is still a single-user device.
- Long-lasting replaceable cartridges. A single U-Scan Nutrio cartridge is good for up to 22 tests, so it can last you between 1 and 3 months, depending on the number of weekly measurements. Once it’s done, you’ll need to put on a pair of gloves and replace it.
What is the Withings U-Scan Nutrio personalized nutrition strategy, and how to create one?
U-Scan Nutrio doesn’t just use generalized guidelines; it relies on urine analysis to create tailored nutritional plans that reflect your specific intake. The Nutrio module measures 4 key parameters and then sends its readings to the Withings app, where you can adjust your health strategy through these practices:
- Set your goals. The first thing you should do is decide what you’re trying to achieve. That could be improving your hydration, reaching pH balance, or increasing your vitamin C intake.
- Respond to the hydration reminders. U-Scan Nutrio’s HydroStatus readings will let you know when to drink water and how much, so make sure to follow up on these suggestions.
- Make the suggested dietary adjustments. The same goes for your diet, where you’ll need to adjust your intake of vitamin C through fruits and veggies and protein through eggs and meat.
By leveraging real-time biomarker results, Nutrio offers genuinely data-driven nutrition guidance. There’s no generic "eat more greens" or "stay off sweets" advice here, as every reminder is anchored in your body’s actual needs.
However, there are a few culprits. As urinary pH may reflect the intake of animal protein - and this metric is then used to tailor your individual nutritional plan - it may not be as accurate or even useful to people who do not consume animal-derived ingredients.
In general, while the basis for these nutritional plans does seem intriguing, there are no studies to demonstrate this approach is legitimate or superior to following a balanced diet based on universally accepted dietary guidelines.
The Withings U-Scan Nutrio: user reviews
Like with all things tech, especially new products, the overall user sentiment is a mixed bag. That’s why this section will dive into these reviews, so you can see what independent user feedback is about. That said, let’s start with the bad first.
While I came across some criticism related to connectivity issues, the most common pain point for U-Scan Nutrio across multiple review platforms is the device’s steep price. Many of these users also note they’d be okay with the $379.95 cost of entry if not for Withings’s subscription model on top of it.
On the flip side, the majority of user feedback is positive, with most comments mentioning either how convenient U-Scan Nutrio’s hands-free operation is or how easily the device integrates with the Withings app.
The reported accuracy of urine analysis seems to be another strong point, with a few users noting they’ve compared it to lab results.
The Withings U-Scan Nutrio packages and how to pick the best one for your needs
Although Withings initially planned on creating separate cartridges for female reproductive health (Cycle Sync) and nutrition (Nutri Balance), its current lineup is even simpler. There are only two available subscription models to choose from here:
- Proactive package. With this one, you get your standard U-Scan reader, a U-Scan Station for charging, cleaning, and storing the device, and a Nutrio cartridge that’s good for 22 tests. This package is ideal for 2 to 4 urine analyses per week, and its price comes out to $379.95, with automatic cartridge shipment costing $99.95/renewal.
- Intensive package. If you’d like to measure those 4 markers in your urine more frequently, the Intensive package allows you to do so for $449.96 (one-time) and $179.96/renewal. It offers everything the entry-level Proactive package does, but comes with 2 U-Scan Nutrio cartridges instead. And since you can conduct a total of 44 tests this way, this package is ideal for 5 to 7 measurements per week.
In both cases, access to Withings+ is complementary, so you’re getting vitality indicators, health improvement scores, and AI-driven insights either way. Thus, the choice here boils down to the type of user you are:
- The Proactive package will suffice for those aiming to balance their diet and optimize their wellness routine.
- The Intensive package is better suited for users who want to continuously support their nutritional improvements with near-daily feedback.
Final verdict: is the Withings U-Scan Nutrio worth it?
To wrap things up, the Withings U-Scan Nutrio is a solid product. It’s innovative, it offers automated, almost-daily urine tracking, and it bases its suggestions on your specific readings.
That said, it’s not all rainbows and sunshine. For starters, the price of entry is high, and the subscription model doesn’t help, either. However, its most significant drawbacks are related to the lack of independent scientific validation, concerns about its transparency as well as credible support for the personalized insights, and the fact that neither the FDA nor CE Medical has approved it as a diagnostic device.
So, if you do end up buying a U-Scan Nutrio, please consult your doctor before you act on any of its data.

Do I need a subscription to use all Withings U-Scan Nutrio features?
Yes, you do need Withings+ to unlock the full potential of the device’s measurements. However, the subscription is already included in both packages, so you won’t have to pay extra for it.
How long does a Withings U-Scan Nutrio cartridge last?
According to Withings, a Nutrio cartridge will expire after 3 months once it has been opened and exposed to air. But with anywhere between 2 and 7 weekly measurements, you’ll be replacing these cartridges long before they can expire.
Can multiple people in one household use the same Withings U-Scan Nutrio device?
