Threads now offers Hidden Words feature, separate from Instagram

Threads is now offering its own Hidden Words setting, separate from Instagram, which allows you to block unwanted words or discussions.

The feature “includes newly added custom filters to block words, phrases, and emojis in batches, with optional time limits,” says Instagram head Adam Mosseri.

According to Mosseri, the platform encourages an open exchange of perspectives, and it’s essential for people to shape the experience into one where they feel comfortable expressing themselves.

The tool can filter out words, phrases, and emojis – and you can adjust the settings to expire within 30 days if you want the block to be temporary. You might benefit from the feature if you wish to avoid spoilers for a certain TV show or not participate in certain discussions that you’re tired of.

In the past, Hidden Words was tied to Instagram, so the filters would apply to both platforms simultaneously. But now, you can set up a new list on Threads to personalize your experience, separately from Instagram.

Threads first launched as an extension of Instagram, and many of Meta’s policies applied to several platforms simultaneously. For example, in February 2024, Meta started clearly marking potentially AI-generated content on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.

But now, the company is addressing that people are having different kinds of experiences and forming separate networks on Threads. The platform has already started testing its separate-from-Instagram DM inbox, meaning that users won’t have to use Instagram or switch apps to have a conversation on Threads.
