Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday was huge, but problems are already emerging with Windows 11 security updates. The tech giant is blocking the July update on some Dell PCs because it’s causing major issues for the devices.
The company has confirmed that Tuesday’s KB5101650 update is causing unexpected shutdowns, poor performance, increased heat, and battery drain on some Dell PCs.
Some because only a limited number of Dell devices with Intel processors are affected, Microsoft said in a document first spotted by Windows Latest.
Still, Microsoft hasn’t yet published a list of problem-ridden Dell devices and only says that the Windows 11 July 2026 update is being blocked for now. In other words, the update isn’t offered to incompatible Dell PCs.
The problem seems to be related to June’s optional KB5095093 update. That one, unlike July’s update, wasn’t mandatory, but some users apparently still installed it out of curiosity.
According to Microsoft, a limited number of Dell devices with June’s update installed might display a yellow exclamation point in Device Manager next to the Intel Innovation Platform Framework Processor Participant driver.
“This issue was reported by Dell during testing and identified as an incompatibility between the Intel driver and the new Windows USB-C Connection Manager interface introduced in the June 23rd, 2026, Windows preview update (KB5095093),” said the company.
Microsoft plans to release a resolution for affected devices in the coming days, but it’s not available yet.
“We are working together with Dell to prevent the affected models from experiencing the issue.”
Microsoft plans to release a resolution for affected devices in the coming days, but it’s not available yet.
It’s also unclear how many devices are affected by the issue, but the aforementioned Intel Innovation Platform Framework Processor Participant driver isn’t exclusive to Dell PCs: it’s a system-level component that manages Intel processor power and thermals.
