Users torn about WhatsApp feature, threaten to quit the app

WhatsApp users are angry because, despite the company’s claims, they can’t opt out of Meta’s AI feature.

Meta recently introduced its AI chatbot to WhatsApp. While the feature rollout shouldn’t come as a total surprise since it started in 2023 in some countries, it was news to some WhatsApp users nonetheless.

Some users drew attention to the feature because it can’t be removed, even though the company claimed that the service is optional.

WhatsApp told the BBC that it provides its users with options and that it listens to their feedback.

It’s been reported that not all users can use the feature as WhatsApp hasn’t yet released it to all users worldwide.

The Meta AI chatbot can be summoned on WhatsApp by clicking on a circle in blue, green, and pink at the bottom right corner of the Chats screen. This is where users can chat with the AI and ask questions.

Users can also use Meta AI by writing their search in the search bar found above their messages.

The feature also works on Facebook Messenger and Instagram. The chatbot is powered by Llama 4, Meta’s large language model (LLM).

Before users start asking Meta AI questions, they are provided with information on the feature, calling it “an optional service.” It also says that Meta AI can only read messages that are shared with it and can’t access personal chats.

“Don’t share information, including sensitive topics, about others or yourself that you don’t want the AI to retain and use,” warns the message.

A number of users online expressed their frustration with the feature and not being able to actually disable it.

Some users were quick to notice that they’re partially “forced” to use WhatsApp due to their family and friends seeing it as “the only option to talk with others.”

“In some countries it's like a cancer, also, 99% of boomers can't be bothered to make the switch once they are on there,” noted one user, with many others pointing out the fact that even though some might not like WhatsApp, they’re not willing to make the change.

Some users shared that this unwillingness also affects them.

“It is literally impossible. All of my friends, family, and colleagues use WhatsApp. I don't know a single person who has at least tried switching to signal, except for myself. I can not give up the entirety of my social life for a bit more privacy,” shared one user.

Nevertheless, some privacy-conscious users are ready to switch to other platforms, such as Signal.

“I don't think anyone should trust an artificial intelligence implemented by a company that doesn't understand the basic definitions of words such as ‘optional,’” shared a Redditor.

“Now's the time to leave WhatsApp and switch to better platforms that respect user privacy. I am talking about services like Signal,” wrote another user.

“They’re clearly hungry for data to train their AI, and found the fastest way to get it: integrating it right into chats,” wrote a user, explaining why the company forces its AI feature to stay, no matter the backlash.
