WhatsApp now supports multiple phones under one account

A “highly requested” feature allows users to group up to four phones in a single WhatsApp account, similar to existing support for web browsers, tablets, and desktops.
Each linked phone connects to WhatsApp independently, ensuring end-to-end messages, media, and call encryption. Users will be automatically logged out of all companion devices if their “primary” device remains inactive for an extended period.
“Linking phones as companion devices makes messaging easier. Now you can switch between phones without signing out and pick up your chats where you left off,” WhatsApp said.
The messaging app said the functionality would also benefit small business owners, who can now have multiple employees responding to customers directly from their phones under the same WhatsApp Business account.
WhatsApp, which said that the feature was “highly requested by users,” has begun rolling out worldwide, and the feature will be available to everyone in the coming weeks.
Alongside the multi-phone update, WhatsApp has also introduced an alternative and “more accessible” way to link companion devices.
Instead of scanning QR codes, users can now enter their phone number on WhatsApp Web to receive a one-time code and use it on their phone to enable device linking. WhatsApp said it would introduce the feature to more companion devices.
WhatsApp has been working for years to make the app usable across multiple devices simultaneously, first introducing a web interface before moving to secondary devices.
Meta-owned WhatsApp is the world’s most popular messaging app and has spent years working on “true” multi-device support that does not require a smartphone connection.
