WhatsApp is testing a new username feature that will allow users to chat without sharing phone numbers, according to WABetaInfo leaks.
The update means users can message each other without swapping digits – a win for Gen Z, who’ve never needed to memorize phone numbers.
In the last few years, users have been increasingly asking for more privacy, especially as anonymity can offer protection from spam, harassment, and even data leaks.
Telegram and Signal were early adopters of this approach and are already trusted by privacy-conscious users. They’ve set the precedent for numberless communication.
WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta, has been under increasing scrutiny over data collection and user privacy, and has faced hefty fines in various lawsuits.
How it works
*Users will be able to create a unique handle, e.g., @marcus_the_undeliverable.
*The link will still exist between the number and username, but only the handle will be visible.
*The format rules are that the handle must contain at least one letter. They can include numbers, periods and underscores, but cannot begin with “www.”
*Users will be able to change their handles, for which others will be notified of – enhancing transparency.
*A username availability checker will roll out on WhatsApp web gradually.
Branding meets privacy
Though not officially announced, credible leaks from WABetaInfo confirm usernames are being tested and could roll out globally in the coming weeks.
The change is a win for privacy, especially for people joining public groups, handling business chats, or having one-off conversations.
It also opens the door to brand handles and tighter marketing funnels and aligns with Meta’s push toward a unified identity system across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Threads.
