Apple, which announced it would join forces with Google's Gemini on January 12th, is currently testing Gemini chatbot technology as a standalone Siri app, according to a new Bloomberg report on Wednesday.
“After careful evaluation, we determined that Google’s technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models, and we’re excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for our users,” Apple said earlier this month.
But instead of separate apps like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini chatbots, the new Siri interface will be deeply integrated into its software across Apple's ecosystem, sources told Bloomberg.
Apple chatbot code name: Campos
As typical for chatbot assistants, Campos will have both voice- and typing-based modes, allowing users to search the web, create content, generate images, summarize information, and analyze uploaded files, the report states.
Campos will run a higher-end version of the custom Google model, comparable to Gemini 3, internally referred to as Apple Foundation Models version 11, according to the report.
Apple’s goal is to introduce the Siri refresh at its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in June, as part of the iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 software releases.
Siri's revamp is a crucial part of Apple's strategy to catch up to its big tech peers in the AI race after its initial "Apple Intelligence" rollout in 2024 met with lukewarm reception, Reuters says.
For users unimpressed by an Apple-powered chatbot, Siri will still receive a planned update later this year while retaining its current interface with the upcoming release of iOS 26.4.
Apple enters the pin race
Separately, the Information on Wednesday reported that Apple is in early development of an AI-powered wearable pin, said to be roughly the same size and weight of an Apple Air Tag, sporting a sleek glass-and-aluminium design.
The device reportedly features two cameras (standard and wide-angle), three microphones, one speaker, a physical button on one side, and wireless charging.
The AI pin is expected to be released in 2027 with a planned production schedule of approximately 20 million units to start.
Meanwhile, the world's first commercially available “AI Pin” from Humane was once a highly anticipated product, marketed as an AI assistant capable of replacing a smartphone.
However, the device was ultimately discontinued barely a month after its April 2024 launch, widely panned by tech reviewers for its limited functionality and performance issues.
Humane was founded in 2018 by two ex-Apple designers, Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, who raised more than $230 million from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Microsoft, Qualcomm Ventures, and other notable investors.
Putting Humane on the market after scrapping the AI pin, the founders sold parts of the company to HPE in February 2025.
