Mozilla is rolling out an AI kill switch for Firefox

Mozilla will let Firefox users control AI features in their browser – or turn them off completely.

Firefox will be “a browser that gives you a say,” according to Mozilla, which is rolling out the new toggle on February 24th, just as rivals keep piling AI features onto users, whether they want them or not.

Users will find “Block AI enhancements” toggle in their desktop browser settings. It will allow them to block all current and future generative AI features in Firefox, or pick and choose which ones to keep, according to Mozilla.

For example, if they want to browse the web in their preferred languages, users will be able to keep AI translations switched on, while turning off everything else.

At launch, AI features that users will be able to manage individually will also include alt text in PDFs, which adds accessibility descriptions to images in PDF pages, and AI-enhanced tab grouping, which suggests related tabs and group names.

Users will also be able to switch on or off link previews, as well as the AI chatbot in the sidebar, with options including Anthropic Claude, OpenAI ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, and Le Chat Mistral.

“We believe choice is more important than ever as AI becomes a part of people’s browsing experiences. What matters to us is giving people control, no matter how they feel about AI,” Mozilla said in a blog post.

While other major browsers, including Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, allow users to disable most AI features, Firefox stands out with its new unified control toggle.

Until now, the best options for an AI-free browsing experience have been niche privacy-focused browsers or third-party tools that disable AI features from Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.
