Grindr tests gAI, its new suite of AI features for matchmaking

Grindr, the dating app for the LGBTQ+ community, has introduced an AI-powered subscription that promises to ensure high-quality matches.

The new ultra-premium subscription, called Edge, was first trialled in Australia and New Zealand at a monthly cost of AUD$109.99 ($78), compared to the AUD$29.99 basic subscription, the Guardian reports.

The Edge subscription is now entering new markets, with some US users reporting prices of $349 a month.

The features, dubbed the “gAI” by Grindr, include a recap of previous chats and missed connections, helping users to reconnect with their matches when traveling.

The Edge users receive personalized profile recommendations daily, surfacing “more relevant, high-quality matches,” according to the company’s blog post.

Moreover, the AI feature offers profile insights, which Grindr calls “additional context and robust signals,” such as age or tribe match.

The company claims users remain in control of their data at all times and turn off AI-powered features in privacy settings, while “sensitive health data is categorically excluded from AI use.”

Grindr has nearly 15 million monthly active users, making it the most popular dating app for the LGBTQ+ community.

Some users, however, may be reluctant to grant AI systems access to their sensitive data, given the company’s privacy-related troubles in the past.

Privacy advocacy group None of Your Business (noyb) filed a complaint with Austria’s data protection authority in December 2025, alleging that Grindr allowed TikTok to illegally track users’ activity.

The company is also facing a lawsuit at the High Court in London for allegedly sharing personal information, including users’ HIV status, with third parties.

The lawsuit claims that sensitive information was shared with Apptimize and Localytics, tech companies that provide mobile app optimization.

Grindr’s spokesperson said that the company takes privacy “extremely seriously,” while allegations are based on a mischaracterization of practices from years ago.

By introducing Edge, Grindr joins a growing number of popular dating apps, such as Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge, that use AI features to enhance the user experience.
