Dutch court rules marriage to be invalid due to ChatGPT vows

A Dutch couple thought they tied the knot last year using vows written by ChatGPT. The court has just ruled that the marriage wasn’t formalized.

The couple asked their friend to initiate their informal civil ceremony, which took place in April 2025 in Zwolle. The friend turned to ChatGPT, a popular artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, for writing vows, France 24 reports.

However, the newlywed’s happiness didn’t last long – the Dutch court ruled that their marriage wasn’t formalized because of the AI-generated text used at the ceremony.

The court noted that couples are required by law to declare that they will fulfill all marriage-related legal obligations.

Stating that the marriage certificate was erroneously recorded in the civil registry, the ruling quoted the AI-generated vows in question.

For example, the man was asked to promise to “laugh together, grow together, and love each other no matter what.”

The vows also involved asking the couple if they would “keep teasing each other” and “holding on to each other” in difficult times.

Moreover, the friend declared the newlyweds not only husband and wife, but also “a crazy couple” and “each other’s home.”

The couple argued that the civil officer at the ceremony had not pointed out the mistake at the time, and changing the date of their marriage would have a significant emotional impact on them.
