Spotify has released its latest feature, “Prompted Playlist,” which puts the algorithm in users' hands.
The streaming giant has announced a new beta feature that gives users complete control over their Spotify experience.
With “Prompted Playlist,” Spotify users will be able to describe exactly what they want to listen to.
Whether they’re feeling a specific vibe or want to create a soundtrack that captures a particular moment in their life, users are offered personalized playlists based on their prompts.
This new feature also taps into users' complete listening history, which means that “each playlist reflects not only what you love today, but the full arc of your taste,” Spotify said on its website, For the Record.
Examples of prompted playlists include “music from my top artists from the last five years” or an activity-specific playlist like “high-energy pop and hip-hop for a 30-minute 5K run that keeps a steady pace before easing into relaxing songs for a cool-down.”
And because AI can’t get it right one hundred percent of the time, Spotify allows users to fine-tune their prompt and update their new playlist by selecting the refresh weekly or daily option.
Spotify positions this new feature as an opportunity to curate users’ own Discovery Weekly playlists.
Users who need help can ask Spotify to give them ideas for prompts, such as “songs from artists who are headlining major tours right now.”
Spotify’s team also provides prompts and English language algorithms that will show up as personalized playlists, similar to Daylists.
As the feature is in beta, Spotify claims that the service will improve gradually over time.
“We believe that technology is only as good as the humans behind it. Spotify listeners have created nearly nine billion playlists, which is proof that human curation is still the heartbeat of the platform,” Spotify said.
The feature is currently only available for Spotify users in New Zealand. However, based on the features' success, it is expected to roll out in other countries in 2026.
