According to the updated X (formerly known as Twitter) terms of service, users can no longer opt out of having their content used to train Grok, its artificial intelligence.
Previously, there was an option to disable content scraping, which was turned on by default. However, users began to notice it only in late July as the checkbox was buried among the settings. This already was a potential breach of European data protection rules, which state that users should be given the choice whether to opt in or not.
Starting from November 15th, 2024, the company will also be able to use, modify, and transmit all content “in any and all media or distribution methods now known or later developed, for any purpose.”
Additionally, third parties can also gain access to user content and handle it accordingly.
X members and organizations such as EFF have already expressed dissatisfaction, but the chances of the social media giant reversing these changes are slim.
On the other hand, the Data Protection Commission has managed to make X suspend the processing of the personal data of its users’ posts made between 7th May and 1st August 2024 for AI training purposes. However, this applies to EU and EEA member countries only.
