Learn moreWhen you hear “Xfinity,” you probably think of internet, cable, and phone plans. This company has proven itself a jack of many trades, but has it mastered the art of home security? Well, that’s what I sought to find out. In this Xfinity Home Security review, the Cybernews research team and I assess the service closely, evaluating its equipment functionality, costs, customer service, and user-friendliness
At first glance, Xfinity Home Security offers all the advanced technology you’d expect from a modern home security service, including security cameras, door and window sensors, motion detectors, professional monitoring, and more. Xfinity’s home security plans can also be bundled with its internet and cable services, simplifying billing for existing Xfinity customers.
However, there are some areas I’d like to see Xfinity improve, such as its glaring lack of a free self-monitoring option and lack of integration with voice assistants. DIY installation is also not an option currently, limiting users to only professional installation. Lastly, it has limited availability, restricting who can enjoy Xfinity’s home security service.
Overall, Xfinity Home Security meets most of our requirements. I think it’s an option worth considering, especially if you’re an existing Xfinity user. Continue reading for an in-depth assessment of this service.
Xfinity Home Security overview
Xfinity is part of Comcast’s range of offerings, which includes internet, mobile, TV, streaming, and home phone services. And now, it has expanded into home security. But is it worth bundling the security plan with your existing Xfinity contract?
Xfinity Home Security’s main strength is its customizability. You choose between a self-monitoring ($10.00/month) or a professional monitoring ($55.00/month) plan, and you can also pick which equipment you want. The result is a home security plan tailored to your needs, whether you live in a small apartment or a large property.
Xfinity Home Security is compatible with many IoT devices, such as GE Lighting, Tile Bluetooth trackers, Ecobee thermostats, Yale locks, and more. This opens up plenty of automation possibilities.
If you’re on an existing Xfinity plan, integrating its home security equipment into your smart home is a must. For example, you can livestream your security camera footage to your TV if you want to view the video on a larger screen. The Xfinity Home app is a great little control hub for arming and disarming your system, receiving notifications, and checking if any of your alarms were activated.
Of course, the security system isn’t quite perfect. Below, you’ll see what I liked and disliked about Xfinity Home Security.

Xfinity Home Security: Pros and cons
What does Xfinity Home Security do?
Xfinity Home Security detects, monitors, and reports all kinds of security incidents. Its capabilities depend on which equipment you get and which plans you subscribe to. Since Xfinity offers customizable plans, you can choose the type of security you want for your home.
When building a plan on Xfinity’s site, I was able to include motion detectors, door and window sensors, video doorbells, indoor and outdoor cameras, smoke detectors, and outlet controllers.
Xfinity has smart home integration. Ts compatible with the following devices:
- Cosetta Wireless Lighting by Olutron
- August Door Lock
- Sengled Lighting
- Philips Hue Personal Wireless Lighting
- Kwikset Door Lock
- GE Lighting
- Ecobee Thermostat
- Cor Thermostat
- LIFX Lighting
- Yale Door Lock
- Leviton Lighting
These integrations open up endless possibilities. For example, you can set up your smart light bulb to power up whenever you arm your security system (i.e., when you leave home). You can also set the thermostat to your preferred temperature when you disarm the security system (i.e., when you return home). All these can be controlled and programmed using the Xfinity Home app.
One feature I would like to see, however, is voice assistant integration. It would be a great addition to be able to control the security system hands-free (such as when driving or cooking).
Xfinity Home Security equipment overview
What does the Xfinity Home Security equipment do, and how does it contribute to your home’s overall security? I provide some explanations below.
Touchscreen controller
The Xfinity Home touchscreen is the control center from which you can arm and disarm your system, view live footage from your cameras, change your device settings, and more.
The touchscreen controller has a user-friendly interface and uses simple touch navigation, making it perfect for both beginners and experts.
Door/window sensors
Xfinity’s door/window sensors allow you to get real-time alerts if any door or window is opened in your property. This can potentially notify you of break-ins, kids coming home from school, or your teen sneaking back home after a night out with friends. These sensors can be controlled using the Xfinity Home app.
Motion sensor
Motion sensors detect motion in large sections of your home. These sensors are pet-friendly, as the technology understands the difference between humans and animals of up to 85 pounds.
You can also use Xfinity’s motion detectors to enhance smart home automation. For instance, if your hallways are poorly lit, you can set your smart light bulb in that area to automatically power up if any motion is detected nearby.
Indoor camera
Xfinity indoor cameras allow for both live footage and video recording. This is a great add-on if you like to regularly check in on pets or if you spend lots of time away from home. It even has night vision, so you can use it at night. I often check my indoor cameras while on business trips because I like the peace of mind that comes from seeing my home intact while I’m away.
Indoor/outdoor camera
Like the indoor camera, Xfinity’s outdoor camera allows you to access live footage, video recording, and night vision. The big difference is the outdoor camera is weather resistant, allowing it to withstand rain or shine.
Video doorbell
The Xfinity video doorbell lets you see who’s ringing your doorbell without having to go near your door. You can easily check if your delivery has arrived, if it’s a neighbor you want to avoid, or if your teenager has forgotten their house keys again.
Note: The video doorbell requires a plan that includes both Xfinity Internet and Xfinity Home Self-Protection.
Xfinity Home Security customer service
Xfinity has phone support, an online support center, a live chat feature on its website, user forums, and accounts on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Reddit, where you can also get support.
I like the wide variety of support avenues and was impressed after a conversation with one of Xfinity’s agents. I was connected to a support agent in 3 minutes, and they could answer all my questions about their plans quickly and sufficiently.
Xfinity Home Security monthly costs
To get started with Xfinity Home Security, you need to choose between its Self-Protection plan and its Pro Protection Plus plan. Below, you’ll find an overview of the two.
Features | Self-Protection | Pro Protection Plus |
Professional monitoring | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |
24/7 video recording | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
Powered by xFi Gateway | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
Customizable systems | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
Smartphone app | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
Pricing | $10.00/month | $55.00/month |
The only advantage of the Pro Protection Plus plan is professional monitoring, a feature I recommend you get. Professional monitoring means there’s a monitoring company that will notify you if your alarm goes off. They can also contact authorities on your behalf in case of a security incident.
Without professional monitoring, you are responsible for contacting help in case of a break-in. This is why, in my opinion, Xfinity Self-Protection is a tough sell. Not only does it cost $10.00 per month, but you also still need to purchase equipment separately (and pay installation fees). Despite all these purchases and fees, you still need to monitor your security system. It just doesn’t seem worth the price.
Xfinity equipment add-ons
Whatever plan you get, you’re only paying for Xfinity’s service. Security equipment is a separate purchase.
You can purchase security equipment a la carte or get one of their equipment packages. Below, you’ll find the pricing of each piece of equipment:
- Indoor camera: $60.00
- Indoor/outdoor camera: $120.00
- Video doorbell: $120.00
- Door/window sensor: $20.00
- Motion sensor: $40.00
- Outlet controller: $50.00
Xfinity equipment packages
Xfinity offers 3 equipment packages, each tailored to a different home size. The company also offers installment plans, making these options budget-friendly:
Equipment | Base Home System | Complete Home System | Ultimate Home System |
Designed | Smaller homes with 1-2 entrances | Homes with multiple doors or windows | Larger homes |
Touchscreen controller | 1 | 1 | 1 |
Door/window sensors | 3 | 5 | 10 |
Pet-friendly motion sensor | 1 | 1 | 1 |
Wireless keypad | ❌ No | 1 | 1 |
HD indoor/outdoor Xfinity Camera | ❌ No | 1 | 2 |
Battery + cellular backup | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
Xfinity Home Security yard sign | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
Pricing | $15.00/month for 24 months or a one-time payment of $360.00 | $20.00/month for 24 months or a one-time payment of $480.00 | $25.00/month for 24 months or a one-time payment of $600.00 |
How to install Xfinity Home Security
Unfortunately, you won’t find a DIY installation option. Xfinity Home Security requires professional installation for many components, such as the door/window sensor and motion sensor.
Installation fees vary based on your equipment and location. Some users report spending around $100.00 on installation alone, which can be problematic if you’re on a tight budget.
However, if money isn’t a concern, Xfinity’s professional installation can make your life easier. The technician will test and install all the components of your security system, ensuring that they all work. You can also ask the technician questions about your system, and they will help you find an ideal location for all your new home security equipment.
Xfinity Home Security app overview
The Xfinity Home smartphone app (available on the Apple and Google Play stores) allows you to remotely arm and disarm your alarm system, control connected devices, set automation, watch and live stream camera footage and receive notifications.
I encountered no problems using the app. Its design is simple and user-friendly, and during my testing for this Xfinity Home Security review, I didn’t encounter any bugs. It’s a no-frills control app that works as intended.
Xfinity Home Security reviews
Xfinity Home Security has a 1-star rating on the ConsumerAffairs website, which doesn’t bode well for the company. Many reviews mention poor technical support and suspicious marketing practices.
One reviewer wrote: “During the call the agent said my bill could get lowered by $30/mo. We reviewed the promotion and I agreed. I received my first bill and instead of $30 less it was $30 more. I called Xfinity and requested they reinstate my previous service.”
“They said no problem but now I’m paying over $12 more a month because there is not a promotion they can apply,” the reviewer added. “The service is good but it is very pricey and be aware of the deceptive marketing they advertise.”
Another post complained about the reliability of the service. “We have had Xfinity internet and cable for a while. [Lasted] 3 months. It has been HORRIBLE! Out more than working. Takes HOURS & HOURS to get through to a person.”
It’s worth noting that these reviews were all from 2023, and there are no reviews from 2024. Xfinity may have improved its service, leading to fewer negative reviews. It’s also possible that the quality of the service varies from area to area.
Based on these reviews, I can recommend Xfinity if you’re an existing user and are satisfied with its other services. Otherwise, it may be risky to subscribe to Xfinity without knowing the quality of the service you’ll get.

My final verdict on Xfinity Home Security
Xfinity Home Security’s strongest points are its customizability and IoT integration. With Xfinity, having a fully automated smart home is easy, especially if you’re already subscribed to its other services.
However, it’s far from a perfect security system. In my opinion, Xfinity Home Security is missing free self-monitoring and voice assistant integration. Your fees can also ramp up slowly with the monthly monitoring subscription, equipment purchases, and mandatory professional installation fees.
Xfinity’s negative customer reviews are also a glaring issue, even though I had a pleasant customer support experience. Many users have called out Xfinity’s marketing and pricing schemes, not to mention its unreliable technical support.
So, is Xfinity Home Security a good pick for you? I’d say yes if you’re an Xfinity customer already and you’re happy with its service. Otherwise, you may find yourself unhappy with the quality of its customer support.
Generally, I think it’s a good option for short-term living situations since other services (like Brinks, for example) will lock you in for as long as 36 months. While I’m not yet fully on board for Xfinity, I can see it being a happy choice for many users.
FAQ
Is Xfinity’s self-protection worth it?
No. Xfinity Self-Protection costs $10.00/month and requires you to purchase equipment separately, and even then, you don’t get professional monitoring.

Yes. Xfinity WiFi provides WPA3 encryption, a built-in firewall, and regular updates.
Does Xfinity Home Security need WiFi?
Yes, Xfinity Home Security relies on WiFi for most of its features, including remote monitoring and smart home integration. A weak or unstable WiFi connection may affect the system's performance.
Is Xfinity antivirus good?
Not quite. Xfinity’s antivirus, provided through the Xfinity Internet Security Suite, comes with essential security features to protect you from viruses, malware, and other online threats. However, it does not offer as many advanced options as premium third-party antivirus programs.
Is Xfinity safe from hackers?
Xfinity implements strong security measures, including encryption and firewalls, to protect its network and services from hackers. However, no system is immune to hacking, so it’s important to follow best practices like using strong passwords and enabling multi-factor authentication when possible.
