Sinners makes Oscar history with 16 nominations – but will it be the next Color Purple?

Ryan Coogler's vampire film Sinners earned a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations this week. Discussion is rife on social media, covering conversion rate, historical comparisons with Spielberg's The Color Purple, and reigniting the mess vs masterpiece debate, as the countdown to the Academy Awards 2026 begins.
With the online razzmatazz amping up as the news of Sinners’ 16 nominations piped in, I took to social media to gauge the reaction.
The initial vibes were jubilation and surprise, particularly since the best picture nomination traditionally generates the most noise. And this year, Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another is the heavy favorite with the bookies to win, hence no hype needed.
The first Tweet that stood out was one by @majornija, who wrote, “Sinners got SIXTEEN Oscar nominations. Y’all, get ready. They’re about to play so hard in our faces.”

I wasn’t really sure what she meant at first, but on closer inspection, it appears that “they” = the industry, and “playing in your face” is slang for being manipulated, played, or disrespected.
And the talk in the community reflected that, with one commenter saying, “chile...the actual award they got will be the title of most nominated in Oscar history,” which prompted a reply of “Ma’am. You’re right,” from the original poster. Colloquial language at its finest.
Digging deeper, others pointed out another heavily nominated movie – Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple from 1985, which was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and failed to bring home a single accolade.
There was a cultural conversation going on back in the mid-1980s with fellow director Spike Lee claiming that black men in the movie were depicted as "one-dimensional animals."
And Nija’s X post drew direct comparisons, with speculation over a potential humiliation for Sinners as well. Other users speculated on numbers along the scale, with some manipulating the tired trend of “6,7.”
Over on TikTok, movie buff @sethreviewsfilms brought more recent comparisons, reminding us that Sinners has usurped Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (11 nominations), Ben Hur (12), and Titanic (14).
The review opened up the masterpiece debate, calling it “one of the great American films of the decade” and that it’s something to celebrate, regardless of whether you love it or not.”

Others would beg to differ, and this is precisely a great moment to pick the film apart. Back over on X, @Serious_Falcon slated the film's disconnected nature.
“Sinners was a mess. ‘Let's throw a party, but Vampires with boundaries want to come,’” he sarcastically observed.
Sinners was a mess. “Lets throw a party but Vampires with boundaries want to come” was the entire plot, then the best part of the film (killing all the evil KKK) had nothing to do with the rest, but the music sequence in the middle was definitely dope. 🤷♂️ https://t.co/tPFMmbNuPE

However many nominations Sinners has won, only time will tell if the film has any real bite.
