Can Baby Yoda be the new Star wars hero in The Mandalorian and Grogu?

Once a meme as “Baby Yoda,” Grogu is now being positioned as a possible post-Skywalker hero for Star Wars. His Jedi-Mandalorian path may be reshaping the franchise’s future.
I remember a few years ago, a friend of mine became obsessed with a new character on the scene, Baby Yoda, and kept sending me memes, much to my bewilderment.
The bewilderment was probably because I was so entrenched in past Star Wars mythology of Yoda senior, the Skywalkers, Chewbacca, et al.
First appearing on Disney+ in The Mandalorian in 2019, Grogu went viral for his cute, diminutive form, with thousands of memes flooding the internet.
Even Elon Musk was in on the act.

However, over time, Grogu has begun to feel less like a meme and more like a glimpse at where Star Wars itself is heading.
Hope vs fatigue
As director of the new movie The Mandalorian and Grogu, Jon Favreau told Gamesradar that Grogu is “not on the typical Jedi path of a youngling," but has "trained with some of the best Jedi teachers – it feels this could be a breakaway moment, especially if the conversion from popular TV show to movie format can be made.
With Star Wars at a crossroads moment, there is a lot at stake, even if the hype feels more low-key.
When fans used to endure generation-long exercises in patience (once having to wait 16 years for the next film), quality was preferred over quantity.
And, by having to sit through over fourteen hours of episodic content across three seasons of The Mandalorian, some have understandably become disenfranchised.
One fan on X recently said, “They turned STAR WARS, the most thriving theatrical brand on earth, and turned it into a bunch of mediocre TV, and then adapted that TV as a way back to theaters.”
I don’t care if it makes a billion dollars - which it won’t - it’s that they turned STAR WARS, the most thriving theatrical brand on earth, and turned it into a bunch of mediocre TV, and then adapted that TV as a way back to theatres. awful! I’m not interested

A new kind of Jedi
As per Star Wars of yesteryear, Jedi philosophy was based on principles of detachment, as becoming too close to someone could lead to a protagonist's downfall – just ask Anakin Skywalker.
But because Grogu (Baby Yoda) walked away from the traditional Jedi discipline, when being presented with the choice of a lightsaber or protective garment, the chainmail – Grogu plumped for the latter, resulting in a love of connection, rather than a move to the dark side.
Favreau was keen to point out that Grogu still has the Jedi identity, however, as well as, of course, the character's Mandalorian commitments.
One Redditor soaked up the depth of the development, observing a paradigm shift in how the franchise might navigate its new era.
“I believe that Grogu will be used to progress the general story of Star Wars alone, acting almost as a main character or central character,” the post read, adding, “this would allow for the story to continue long into the future while keeping events that happen along the way relevant to Grogu.”

Prioritizing emotion
When I think back to those days of A New Hope (1977) on VHS, and seeing The Phantom Menace (1999) in the cinema, much of the ideology of Star Wars was about battle, speed, agility, loyalty, and betrayal.
Fast forward to the present, and it's a case of parenting, mentoring, and protection, as The Mandalorian show birthed a new caring side to the characters, particularly the relationship between Grogu and Din Djarin (guardian figure).
And because Disney likes to circle back on legacy characters – R2-D2, for example – the long timeline ahead means they have a character in Grogu who can age slowly and become universal. That’s not to say, however, that the memes will ever die.
It feels like a decentralization of pure Jedi values, but one that had to happen. Grogu offers a softer, more flexible interpretation, without a path to absolute ruin.
After all, Yoda senior was aged from the start, but Baby Yoda has a while to run yet.
