Nintendo finally reveals Mario and Princess Peach’s relationship status

Nintendo, via its Nintendo Today app, has just revealed Mario and Peach’s relationship status, proving netizens right: it’s hard out there for daters.

It’s official. After years of debates and arguments over Mario and Peach’s relationship status, Nintendo revealed that the pair actually aren’t official – they’re just friends.

An X post found by Vice reveals that “Princess Peach and Mario are good friends and help each other out whenever they can.”

Netizens were shocked by the news that Mario was seemingly friend-zoned by the whole squad at Nintendo.

Many users across various social media platforms commented on the newly appointed relationship status.

“What the heck. Did they friend-zone Mario LOL. Also, she's a friend who sometimes kisses him on the nose,” one X user responded.

This comment was mirrored by Vice, which brought to our attention the sheer amount of content depicting the evolution of Princess Peach kissing Mario.

One X user asked what the point of branding Peach and Mario as “good friends” while also saying that they’re “not a fan of modern media’s insistence on shunning romance.”

A Reddit post on the r/popculturechat subreddit, which received 6.4K votes and over 600 comments, was also perplexed by this new relationship status reveal.

Many joked that Mario just got friend-zoned by his “corporate overlords,” while others filed this newly dubbed relationship under “iconic situationships.”

“Mario continues to risk his life for 'good friends.’ Our lil Italian boy is so far deep in the friend zone that even Bowser is starting to feel bad for him,” another Redditor commented.

Other redditors complained that this relationship status is “definitely not canon,” and while “it’s their lore,” this reveal by Nintendo is essentially BS.

Redditors also insinuated that Mario and Princess Peach are “friends with benefits.”

Users didn’t take the implication that Mario and Princess Peach “help each other out whenever they can” lightly.

This quote from Nintendo took on a life of its own as users began spinning this into an R rated narrative, rather than the PG story that Nintendo are attempting to portray.

Nintendo shutting down Peach and Mario’s relationship mirrors users' real-life experiences

What’s surprising is the responses from users who related to the news that Mario and Princess Peach are “just friends.”

Now, I know how hard dating can be, and I would have to agree that the neurotic portrayal of romantic relationships in the media reflects the dating world as we know it today.

I mean, if a man who is constantly saving a princess from the clutches of an evil villain gets friend-zoned, then what does that mean for the rest of us?

One X user mirrored this sentiment, saying, “If Mario is getting friend-zoned, what chance does any other man have?”

Many others were horrified, saying that the fictional princess “friend-zoned the plumber who keeps saving her life...that's messed up.”

Another user complained of companies not being open about romantic relationships in their games, seemingly demonizing romance when its a normal part of life.

“I'm a bit tired of companies not admitting love as something normal that can happen. Everybody needs to be "friends" like they are scared of relationships. SEGA did the same with Sonic & Amy, before she was super into it, and now she's just a random friend that hangs out.”

But one thing’s for certain, Mario and Princess Peach followers aren’t buying the new relationship status.

Maybe there’s still hope for all of us single people out there.
