What does out-of-market NFL games mean?

Out-of-market NFL games are games not broadcast by your local television networks because they’re considered not to be of interest to local viewers. However, that’s not always the case. There are local viewers who are fans of out-of-market teams or simply want to catch more games this season. Out-of-market broadcasting packages allow such viewers to watch non-local NFL games from their homes.

However, viewers who do live in the area of these games will experience blackouts when trying to use these packages. This system was put in place to encourage viewers to use their local broadcasters’ services or attend games in person.

Why are some NFL games out of market?

Some NFL games are considered out-of-market because they’re only broadcast in American states outside the one you’re currently in. That means they aren’t broadcasted by your local TV channels in your area.

NFL blackouts occur when a team plays in its local market or home state. For example, if the New York Jets are playing a game in the state of New York, a TV broadcast or online live stream is entirely unavailable in a 75-mile radius of the stadium. However, sometimes blackouts aren’t enforced if tickets to the regional game are sold out.

As you can imagine, this situation can be frustrating if you want to watch every NFL game with your favorite team. Luckily, you can do so without trouble using one of the best VPNs on the market. These services can reroute your connection through servers in other US states, hiding your IP address and thus eliminating blackouts and other restrictions.

Ways to watch out-of-market NFL games

Catching out-of-market NFL games can be tricky or expensive due to regional broadcasting rules and broadcasting rights distribution. If you're living outside your favorite team's local area or simply want access to more games, there are ways to overcome these barriers. One solution is using a VPN, which lets you change your virtual location and access content as if you were in a different state or country. This option is a lot cheaper than watching games on Youtube TV. Also, you get access to every NFL game of the regular season.

Watch out-of-market NFL games on with NFL game pass on Amazon Prime Video

Recently, Amazon Prime Video has introduced a new way to watch out-of-market NFL games by partnering with DAZN to offer the NFL Game Pass as an add-on subscription. It's available in UK, Germany, France, Australia, Mexico, Brazil. To use this method, you’ll need an active Amazon Prime subscription, which costs $10 per month and must purchase the separate NFL Game Pass add-on. This package not only provides access to live out-of-market NFL games but also includes the NFL Network and NFL RedZone, which are valuable for getting comprehensive coverage, live look-ins, and game highlights.

During my testing, I successfully used this method by connecting to a VPN server in the UK, creating a new Amazon account, subscribing to Amazon Prime, and purchasing the NFL Game Pass add-on. I used incognito mode for each step to ensure privacy and minimize potential issues. I found that Amazon Prime Video's VPN detection is not as strict as DAZN’s, allowing for a smoother experience when using a VPN to bypass geo-restrictions.

While connected to a VPN. Create a new Amazon account. Using a new Amazon account helps ensure a smoother experience when subscribing to regional services. It is better to create a new account to be sure Amazon doesn’t detect that your are using a VPN. Also I recommended to use incognito or private browsing mode. Start by opening an incognito window in your web browser, then visit the Amazon website for the region you connected to (such as amazon.co.uk if you chose the UK or amazon.ca for Canada version). Create a new Amazon account, using a different email address than the one associated with your existing account.

NFL Game Pass supports watching out-of-market games in many countries globally but not in the US because NFL+ took its place.

Prices vary based on region, meaning you can get cheaper prices if you use a VPN before signing up. For example, the service costs around $203/year in the UK, while in Brazil, it costs roughly $69/year – that’s 5 times less than the YouTube TV and NFL Sunday Ticket bundle. Get access to out-of-market NFL games with NFL+ Premium

NFL+ Premium was once considered an affordable way to access out-of-market NFL games in the U.S. For $14.99/month, it provided access to preseason, regular-season, and postseason games, along with the NFL Network and RedZone. However, this method no longer works for out-of-market games. Because NFL+ is using GPS and not an IP address to determine your location. So VPN won’t change your location on NFL+ app.

Currently, NFL+ Premium only allows you to stream live audio of every game and watch replays after the games have concluded. While you can watch live local and regular-season primetime games on mobile devices, the service is geo-restricted to the U.S., so you won't be able to watch NFL games on NFL+ outside US.

Watch out-of-market NFL games with NFL Sunday Ticket

The NFL Sunday Ticket is ideal if you’re rooting for a team outside your current market. This package includes all Sunday afternoon games from Fox and CBS, except the ones available with your local CBS or Fox affiliate. As of 2023, the Sunday Ticket is distributed exclusively by YouTube TV.

It’s crucial to note that YouTube TV is exclusive to the US, meaning you’ll need a VPN for geo-blocking if you have holiday plans abroad during the NFL season. Plus, a VPN can still be beneficial to US residents to circumvent other regional broadcast restrictions.

The NFL Sunday Ticket alone costs $449/year. Viewers in some locations can pay $112.25/month in 4 non-cancellable installments. You can also get a YouTube TV and NFL Sunday Ticket bundle for $349/year.

Watch out-of-market NFL games with NFL RedZone

NFL RedZone is a specialized option for die-hard NFL fans who want to catch all Sunday afternoon games. It grants simultaneous real-time coverage of the exciting moment-to-moment gameplay across every match, regardless of the teams playing. But it’s worth noting that the service doesn’t always cover games in full.

NFL RedZone is typically included in numerous cable TV subscription packages at no extra cost. It’s also available with multiple online streaming services, such as YouTube TV, Hulu, and Fubo. However, you'll have to add their sports-centered add-ons to your cart.

How to watch NFL games without Sunday Ticket

Without the Sunday Ticket, the best way to watch NFL games is by using NFL Game Pass International with a VPN. This method provides access to all NFL games without restrictions, even if you're outside the supported regions. The Game Pass is available through the DAZN streaming service and covers every game, including preseason, regular season, playoffs, and the Super Bowl.

By using a right VPN, you can connect to a server in a country where NFL Game Pass International is available, bypassing geo-restrictions. This method is not only effective but also more affordable than the Sunday Ticket, offering comprehensive coverage of NFL action at a lower cost.

To set this up, simply:

  1. Choose a VPN (like NordVPN)
  2. Connect to a server in a region where NFL Game Pass International is available (outside the U.S. and Canada)
  3. Subscribe to NFL Game Pass through DAZN
  4. Enjoy watching all the NFL games without restrictions

Yes, using a VPN to watch out-of-market NFL games is perfectly legal. However, this action may go against the terms and conditions of your online streaming service.

Consequences can vary and typically don’t go beyond IP address blocking, which you can quickly fix by changing your IP address using another server. In rare cases, your account may get temporarily suspended, thus necessitating creating a new one.

It’s worth noting that the most secure VPNs offer loads of tools to effectively mask your activities against detection. For example, NordVPN grants obfuscated servers, which are tailor-made to bypass online censorship by making your VPN traffic appear as regular traffic.

Conclusion

The 2025 NFL season will have blackouts in place, limiting fans’ ability to watch their favorite teams’ games. This can quickly become costly if you want to catch all Thursday, Sunday, and Monday night football games, as you’ll need multiple subscriptions. Luckily, there are a few options for you to see the matches without spending a fortune.

The most popular way of watching out-of-market NFL games is with the help of a VPN. It can change your IP address and make it seem like you’re in another American state or country, which is all you need to bypass blackouts.

I’ve tested multiple VPNs’ ability to unblock NFL games and found that NordVPN had the most reliable performance. I recommend it to NFL fans particularly because it has a massive fleet of US servers and allows you to choose specific cities based on the games you want to catch so you don’t have to miss a single match of the upcoming season.

Hi Robert. Once you set up the preferred VPN provider, you can choose a server through the app's interface. NordVPN, for example, offers a very convenient map, so you can choose servers in a different state by clicking/tapping a server pin on the map. You can also use a convenient search bar to find servers in different states. Hope this helps.

I am in a tough situation I live just over the border from Illinois, I purchased NFL Sunday ticket last year and could not watch any locally televised games, the problem is my local FOX network is from Milwaukee and not Chicago yet all Bears home games were blacked out I have spent a lot of time speaking with You Tube TV and Sunday Ticket they have no answers as the local affiliates are out of network(Milwaukee, they broadcast the Packers or Vikings) for some reason Sunday Ticket does not acknowledge that I am out of network from the local provider here. My question is I have used Nord before great product will this fix my problem, I ask because once you order Sunday NFL Ticket there are no refunds and I do not want to drop that kind of money to not get what I signed up for. TIA

Hi Ted, thanks for the question. Your situation is complicated, as you're caught in a geographical overlap between different NFL markets. Using a VPN like NordVPN could potentially help by allowing you to appear as if you're in a different location, potentially outside the blackout zones for Bears games. However, it's important to note that using a VPN to circumvent blackout restrictions may violate the terms of service for NFL Sunday Ticket. Given the no-refund policy, it's a financial risk you need to consider.

Good afternoon, I appreciate this article more than you know. Wanted to ask what is the best step you’d recommend if I wanted to watch every game for the packers but would be remote away from my house when I’d be watching these games. Currently have a iPad that has data plan on it. Was going to provide a hot spot for my chrome book and use my vpn for whatever app or service I need just wasn’t sure it would work not connected to a home wifi

Hi Cris, to watch every Packers game remotely on your iPad, you first have to subscribe to a preferred streaming service, set up a trusted VPN, and then connect to a US server to bypass regional restrictions (so you can watch even when you're away from your current geographical location). If you have a strong data connection and enough data, you should have no trouble enjoying the games. Hope this helped!

I have NFL+ it says I cannot watch the game because it is an in market game?
Cybernews Team
prefix 5 months ago
Hi Joanne, thanks for the question. An in-market game refers to a game that is broadcast on a local network in a specific region. If the streaming platform has a broadcasting deal with that local network, the game will not be available on NFL+. Fortunately, you can bypass this restriction by simply changing your IP address with a reliable VPN, like NordVPN. Set up the VPN and connect to a server located in a state where the game is available on NFL+, and you can enjoy it without restrictions. Hope this helps!

A Nord VPN does not overcome blackouts on NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube TV because it bases your playback area on your mobile devices physical location, not a server IP address.
Cybernews Team
prefix 1 year ago
For NFL Sunday Ticket, ensure it's purchased and installed in the same region as your VPN. Phone browsers may struggle due to GPS verification, but success with NordVPN suggests a workaround. Try different servers or contact NordVPN support for assistance with location-based issues. Hope this helps!
