Capgemini is selling its subsidiary, probably to distance itself from ICE

Capgemini has put its subsidiary Capgemini Government Solutions up for sale. The French IT supplier and consulting company claims that it has too little control over the subsidiary’s activities.
“Capgemini considered that the usual legal constraints imposed in the United States to contract with federal entities carrying out classified activities did not allow the Group to exercise appropriate control over certain aspects of the operations of this subsidiary, to ensure alignment with the Group’s objectives,” Capgemini says in a press release that was published on Sunday.
According to the firm, the Capgemini Government Solutions subsidiary represents 0.4% of the company’s estimated global turnover in 2025, which is less than 2% of its turnover in the US.
The sale of the subsidiary will be initiated immediately.
Capgemini received a lot of heat in France recently because its subsidiary signed a contract with the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which was made public by the French NGO Observatoire des Multinationales. The NGO learned that Capgemini Government Solutions provided data services that enabled the controversial US police agency to track down people for deportation.
In turn, demonstrations against ICE are taking place all around the world to protest the recent shootings of two US citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Both of them were protesting against ICE’s heavy-handed and violent approach to tracking down and arresting illegal immigrants in Minneapolis, demanding that ICE officers leave the city.
Because of this, members of the French parliament and the Minister of Finance, Roland Lescure, asked Capgemini's management to explain its activities in the US. The company’s CGT labor union launched an online petition to end its collaboration with the US government, blaming the firm for “persecuting, arresting, kidnapping, and deporting tens of thousands of people.”
Protests against ICE aren’t only taking place in the US and France, but also in Italy. The country is hosting the Winter Olympics, which will start this Friday. ICE officers will be present at the event in an “advisory” capacity. Still, this has raised strong criticism among Italian citizens.
