“Maduro capture” takes on new meaning as his Nike fleece sells out

The US military's capture of Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro has sent social media into a frenzy. One image, showing the arrested leader in sports-casual wear, gained particular attention, with many users wanting to purchase the grey hoodie.

As the US military gained momentum by air, land, and sea in its strategic pressure on Venezuela, it also managed to capture its leader at the start of the year.

And now, when searching the words “Maduro” and “tracksuit” on X, an entire wealth of posts becomes available, particularly down to his choice of grey tracksuit.

What’s more, the memeification of what’s proving to be the biggest story at the arrival of 2026 has a trifling new side order.

At the top of the pile is a meme shared by X user @HarryBerries in which prices of wearable gear are literally priced in. A sleep mask and ear protectors are listed at $6.99 and $11.99, respectively.

However, it’s the grey fleece that has seen the biggest thrust in popularity. Searches for the garment rocketed, whilst fun was poked at the tone, with one user dubbing it “Maduro grey.”

The icing on the cake came, however, when another person tweeted “50 shades of Maduro grey.”

Viral infochannel @Pubity revealed on Sunday that the tracksuit Maduro was wearing when he was captured had sold out in almost every size.

A casual dictator aesthetic doing the rounds online isn’t a brand new concept; way back in 2012, Time magazine ran a segment pairing now-deceased Cuban leader Fidel Castro with his penchant for Fila, Puma, and Nike tracksuits.

Incidentally, as the article pointed out, the Nike apparel was “barred from being sold in Cuba due to the 40-year-old US trade embargo.”
