$270K bet against Orbán: crypto traders signal Hungary election upset on Polymarket

Three newly created crypto accounts have collectively bet a sizable $269,900 that Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will lose the upcoming election on April 12th.

The current pricing on the Polybeats section of the Polymarket platform has Orbán trailing at a sub 30% probability.

This could well be as a result of the latest information from Hungarian pollsters Medián, who envisage that opposition leader Péter Magyar of the Tisza (Respect and Freedom) Party could even run away with the election and claim a two-thirds majority.

On the other hand, Orbán’s control of the state media, as well as strong support in Hungary’s rural regions, are often cited as reasons why he could retain his position as prime minister.

What is Polymarket?

Founded in 2020 by Shayne Coplan, Polymarket allows users to speculate by betting on the outcomes of real-world events, with cryptocurrency as the main payment method.

The site has been mired in controversy, especially given that in early March, users could punt on a nuclear apocalypse. This has since been removed from the betting options, however.

Then, during the US-Israel war against Iran, an account named “magamyman” bet $20,000 that Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, would no longer be in power by the end of March. The chance was rated at 14%, resulting in a $120,000 profit for the account holder, reported The Atlantic.

And most recently, there was a pushback online from democrat politician Seth Moulton, who lambasted the “dystopian death market” of betting on when US pilots, shot down by Iran last week, were to be found – amid accusations of insider trading.

A series of well-timed bets on the US-Iran ceasefire raised suspicions of insider trading, as frozen payouts create hazy uncertainty about whether the punters received covert information.

Only time will tell whether Polymarket’s real-time odds aggregation will correctly forecast Magyar as the winner of the Hungarian election, or if Orbán's grip will prevail.
