How NymVPN protects your traffic with noise
Privacy was never built into blockchain technology. And the decentralized apps (dApps) that hook you up to it fall short for a simple reason: metadata. While crypto wallets provide some pseudonymous cover, they leak a lot of metadata about who you are and what you do. This information is being surveilled by cybercriminals, data brokers, and governments seeking to de-anonymize you and your financial life for their gain.
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are no stranger to the crypto world. Unfortunately, the VPN market is full of outdated and often malicious software. To protect your data against new surveillance threats, what’s needed is something more than a VPN.
Built on decentralized and blockchain technology, NymVPN is the world’s most anonymous network with all the ease and facility of a VPN app. It was designed by scientists and privacy activists for the age of AI surveillance with Web3 protections at the forefront.
With NymVPN, your privacy is ensured by design, not by company promises:
- Zero-knowledge payments to keep you anonymous, no matter how you pay
- A can’t log network design
- Noise to prevent tracking of your traffic, even against AI
Zero-knowledge payments
Ensuring your privacy with a VPN must begin with how you pay. Most VPN services see your identity directly from your fiat payments, but they also see everything you do online. This means their centralized servers can connect you to your activities. This is not privacy, it’s trust – and why trust a company you don’t know?
NymVPN offers a different model. By utilizing the power of zero-knowledge proofs, your payment information is absolutely de-linked from your use of the app. So you can pay securely in the fiat currency or crypto of your choice, but no one – not even Nym! – will be able to connect you to what you do online. Nym can’t even know you’re even using the network!
For maximal anonymity protections, you can also pay with cryptocurrencies like Monero and Zcash.
Can’t log network
The biggest problem with VPNs when it comes to privacy protections is logging. A VPN functions as your proxy, so they have the capacity to see and keep records that connect you with your online activities. They may promise not to, but they can. This is possible because the large majority of VPNs are centralized: privately owned and operated servers where all your data comes together, so to say, in one spot.
The Nym network is architecturally different: multi-hop and decentralized by default, no single server routing your traffic can link your identity (IP address) with that of your destination.
For crypto privacy, this is crucial because centralized exchanges will publicly record your wallet ID along with that of your transaction partner. But by pairing NymVPN with your wallet, this metadata can be protected, shielding you from the risks of visibility.
Introducing noise against surveillance
With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), surveillance of metadata is now easy to accomplish. Anyone can be de-anonymized and tracked, even while using a reputable VPN. What NymVPN does is to increase what a VPN is capable of by making it a noise machine, or a Noise Generating Network.
All surveillance looks for one thing: a signal in the noise, like trying to identify a person in a crowd. The higher the level of noise, the more difficult it will be to find that signal: you. When you use the Anonymous mode in NymVPN, your traffic will be protected by three types of noise:
- Cover traffic is introduced alongside your normal data packets to block traffic analysis
- With data mixing, your data is shuffled together with that of other users to prevent corresponding senders and receivers
- Timing delays occur as people’s packets are shuffled together, making it difficult to track packets based on timing signatures
Noise: The future of the free internet
Surveillance of the Internet has become the norm, and the world of crypto is no exception. Given the latest string of kidnappings and fraud, the stakes for crypto users couldn’t be higher. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Privacy can be built into web traffic as a default protection, just like end-to-end encryption now is the norm for web browsing.
With NymVPN, you can buy and exchange cryptocurrencies without needing to worry about whether your metadata is being collected and exploited. Your identity, your wallet ID, transactions, financial histories, and contacts will all be protected by decentralization and noise.
And when you don’t need this level of protection as you might for crypto transactions and private messaging, simply use the Fast mode: a decentralized, 2-hop AmneziaWG (WireGuard) connection.
