$2.4 billion utilities company Itron reports internal network security breach

American utilities firm Itron has disclosed that an unauthorized third party gained access to certain of its systems.

Itron, a Liberty Lake-based tech company that offers products and services for energy and water resource management, has submitted an 8-K Filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The firm states that the unauthorized access was detected on April 13th and that the company’s cybersecurity response plan was immediately activated. In addition, an investigation was launched to assess, mitigate, remediate, and contain the breach.

“The company took action to remediate and remove the unauthorized activity and has not observed any subsequent unauthorized activity within its corporate systems. Further, no unauthorized activity was observed in the customer-hosted portion of its systems,” the filing says.

The incident didn’t have any material impact on the company’s operations. Itron also believes the event won’t materially harm the company’s financial results because the insurer will most likely reimburse a significant portion of the costs related to the incident.

“The company is evaluating what legal filings and regulatory notifications might be required because of this incident and intends to take appropriate action based on its review and findings,” the filing continues.

The incident has been reported to the relevant law enforcement authorities.

As of writing, no ransomware extortion group has claimed responsibility for the attack on Itron. It also remains unclear whether any corporate data was exfiltrated.

Itron is an American tech company that provides end-to-end solutions that help manage energy, water, and smart city operations worldwide. It serves over 7,700 customers in more than 100 countries. The company employs around 5,600 workers.

Itron reported revenue of $2.4 billion and a gross profit of $892 million in 2025.
