LA County sues Roblox: “Roblox has created a world where adults and children mingle with little functional oversight.”

The County of Los Angeles has filed a lawsuit against the social media gaming platform Roblox for failing to protect children from predatory behavior.
The city claims that Roblox has created an unsafe online environment for children, as it has become a breeding ground for predators.
According to the lawsuit, young players are exposed to sexually explicit content, exploitation, and grooming because the company chooses to favor profit over the safety of children. Furthermore, the lawsuit alleges that Roblox has failed to implement effective moderation or age-verification systems.
“Roblox has created a massive, largely unsupervised online world where adults and children mingle with little functional oversight. Roblox’s own platform architecture and product design choices, including how it structures account creation and how users can locate and contact one another, create foreseeable pathways for adults to access and target minors at scale,” the indictment reads.
“This lawsuit is about protecting children from online predators and inappropriate content. Roblox has a responsibility to keep kids safe, but instead, it has allowed its platform to become a place where children can be exposed to grooming and exploitation. Los Angeles County is taking action to hold the company accountable and demand real safeguards,” Hilda L. Solis, Los Angeles County Board Chair and First District Supervisor, said in a statement.
In a response to press agency AFP, Roblox rejected the allegations in the suit, insisting the platform was built “with safety at its core.”
“We have advanced safeguards that monitor our platform for harmful content and communications, and users cannot send or receive images via chat, avoiding one of the most prevalent opportunities for misuse seen elsewhere online. There is no finish line when it comes to protecting kids, and while no system can be perfect, our commitment to safety never ends,” a spokesman said.
The lawsuit seeks injunctive relief, abatement, and civil penalties of up to $2,500 per day for each violation of California’s Unfair Competition Law (UCL) and False Advertising Law (FAL).
Roblox has been under scrutiny for exposing children to sexual predators and harmful content for quite some time. In August 2025, the State of Louisiana filed a lawsuit against Roblox for ignoring child safety on its platform.
Earlier this month, the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) launched an investigation into Roblox over the risks that underage users in the European Union may face on the platform.
In November 2025, Roblox rolled out a voluntary age-verification process for users to unlock chat access.
