Cybercrooks claimed an attack on Revolution Parts, alleging they have siphoned details of over 5 million of the company’s customers, including their emails and IP addresses.
The post about the alleged attack was uploaded to a popular data leak forum, which cybercriminals utilize to exchange stolen data. Attackers claim they have personal details of over 5.1 million of Revolution Parts’ customers.
We have reached out to the company and will update the article once we receive a reply.
Meanwhile, the Cybernews research team investigated the data sample attackers provided. According to the team, the sample includes the following information:
- Full names
- Emails
- Phone numbers
- Home addresses
- IP addresses
- Device data
Since Revolution Parts is an e-commerce platform, the information attackers claim to have stolen closely resembles details a customer would fill in when making a purchase. The details also resemble information users would provide when setting up an account.
At least in theory, attackers could utilize the details for identity theft and phishing attacks. Armed with information on user preferences, location, and email addresses, attackers could carry out targeted phishing attacks.
In these cases, malicious actors impersonate legitimate businesses attempting to trick users into revealing more sensitive information. In other cases, attackers distribute infected emails, hoping victims will download malware on their devices.
“When attackers obtain personal and device information, they can use it to craft more targeted scams that are device-specific. Identity profiling is highly likely as well that could be used for future fraud,” the team explained.
Since Revolution Parts caters to businesses as well, malicious actors can prioritize targeting organizations. However, at the time of writing, it is unclear if the information is recent. Attackers sometimes attempt to sell old data, in essence scamming other scammers.
Headquartered in Tempe, Arizona, Revolution Parts sells over $600 million worth of autoparts across its network of dealers.
