Your boss will be AI soon: 50% of business decisions to be augmented by bots

Your boss may soon be more than a human. Leadership roles are increasingly “augmented” with AI bots and automation.

Gartner predicts that by 2027, half of business decisions will be “augmented or automated by AI agents for decision intelligence.” This is a top data and analysis prediction for 2025 and beyond.

The American research and advisory firm also believes that company leaders who understand AI will help drive higher financial performance. On the other hand, firms that don’t properly handle AI may risk critical failures.

“Nearly everything today – from the way we work to how we make decisions – is directly or indirectly influenced by AI. But it doesn’t deliver value on its own – AI needs to be tightly aligned with data, analytics, and governance to enable intelligent, adaptive decisions and actions across the organization,” said Carlie Idoine, VP Analyst at Gartner.

AI agents for decision intelligence combine data, analytics, and AI to create decision flows that support and automate complex judgments.

They handle the complexity, analysis, and retrieval of various data sources to streamline the process.

Gartner recommends that data and analysis leaders team up with business managers to determine which key decisions are most important for the company's success and how AI and data analysis can best improve those decisions.

“AI agents for decision intelligence aren’t a panacea, nor are they infallible,” said Idoine.

“They must be used collectively with effective governance and risk management. Human decisions still require proper knowledge, as well as data and AI literacy.”

Gartner estimates a 20% higher financial performance for the companies that emphasize AI literacy for executives, over those that do not.

Another prediction is that 60% of data and analytics leaders will face critical failures in managing synthetic data. This risks AI governance, model accuracy, and compliance.

AI “augmented” bosses will be held accountable by AI-guided boards, too.

“By 2029, 10% of global boards will use AI guidance to challenge executive decisions that are material to their business,” Gartner estimates.

About a third of companies wil build their own GenAI systems instead of just buying ready-made applications. This helps lower costs while increasing flexibility and control.
