Amazon UK promises to do something about those fake reviews

Changes implemented by Amazon could make its UK users trust the site more.

Amazon has agreed to comply with the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act (DMCCA) in the UK to prevent fake reviews on its marketplace.

The company will improve its systems to deal with fake reviews, as they have been banned under the DMCCA.

Amazon came under the Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) radar after possibly breaching consumer law by failing to protect consumers from false reviews.

The company will upgrade its detection system and address the problem of “catalogue abuse,” which occurs when sellers use positive reviews from successful products to increase their ratings for other products.

To tackle the fake review epidemic, Amazon will punish businesses that follow these unlawful practices.

According to CMA's chief executive, Sarah Cardell, it’s important that Amazon takes matters into its own hands, as many consumers depend on reviews and ratings when buying products, reports UKTN.

Cardell also shared that the CMA will check whether review platforms and businesses listing products comply with the laws regarding fake news.
