After an Apple user asked whether it would rain today, Siri bizarrely led them to a sexual abuse hotline.
Apple Intelligence, Apple’s new artificial intelligence (AI) platform, is pretty buggy, according to Reddit users.
On the Reddit thread iOSBeta, a community that discusses Apple’s iOS/iPad bet software, users reported a few bugs relating to Apple Intelligence and Apple’s AI-enabled personal assistant Siri.
One post on the platform said that “Siri (is) unable to call certain contacts. States “something went wrong” on both regular and AI.”
Many Redditors commented under the post, saying this has been happening with Siri for years. However, even with the new AI update, the problem persists.
Siri, Apple’s personal assistant, is unable to fulfill basic requests regarding the weather. One user posted stating that the “new AI (Apple Intelligence) Siri keep(s) giving me random stuff sometimes when it doesn’t know what to do.”
The screenshot shows the user asking the question, “Rain?” presumably asking Siri if it’s going to rain. Siri doesn’t seem to know what to say, so it spews out random suggestions.
“It sounds like you need support. If you like, I can search the web for ‘sexual assault hotline.’
This may not be too far-fetched of an answer from Siri, as the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network or ‘Rainn’ is the largest non-profit organization in the US.
It may be that Siri confused the question “Rain?” with the sexual abuse non-profit.
One Redditor said, “Did they manage to make Siri worse? Good lord,” while another user responded, “It’s possible to make Siri worse?”
One user said they even had to turn off the new AI mode as it affected Siri’s performance. “I had to turn off AI. Siri sucks at the moment for me. Can’t even stop my timers.”
However, Bloomberg and CNET have reported that Apple’s new AI-enabled Siri function will be released gradually in stages. Siri will be able to do a range of tasks, from controlling your apps to understanding your commands.
Yet these upgrades won’t be ready when Apple Intelligence launches this fall, Bloomberg reports.
Needless to say, this isn’t the first time that Redditors have experienced issues with Apple Intelligence.
One user on Reddit posted on the same subreddit that Apple Intelligence added a phishing email to the user’s priority list.
The post is captioned, “Apple marking a phishing email as ‘priority’ for me to open.” The email was supposedly sent from Xfinity.com, an American telecommunications company that provides internet, mobile plans, and cable TV services.
The comments described Apple Intelligence as a “boomer dad,” while other Redditors compared Apple’s new AI platform with a scammer, saying, “A prince from Nigeria needs your help with a frozen bank account.”
However, one Redditor made a great point regarding bugs in Apple’s new beta product.
“You guys do know the point of a beta is to report things like this so it can be fixed before it goes full public release, right? It’s not just early access, so mistakes are gonna happen a lot, not just bugs, but as a beta user, you’re helping the AI learn what to prioritize and what not to and how to spot things such as spam just as a competent human would. This is just for those who take betas as early access releases rather than what it actually is: public/developer testing.”
This user means that bugs will happen in beta products. Users can report them, and developers will resolve the issues as they arise.
