The $150 “piece of cloth” will become available for purchase in a couple of days, but user reactions don’t seem to indicate that many will be tempted by the new Apple accessory.
Apple has recently launched a new accessory for its iPhone, which has become a hot topic in online discussions.
The company has released iPhone Pocket, the “piece of cloth” available in various colors and in two lengths, with a starting price of $149.95.
What makes this accessory so special is that it is a collaboration with Issey Miyake, a renowned Japanese designer.
The pocket is a singular 3D-knitted construction that mimics a standard pocket, allowing users to fit any size iPhone, as well as other items.
The new accessory will be available starting November 14th in select Apple Store locations and online, the company announced. The iPhone Pocket will be available for purchase in France, Greater China, Italy, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the UK, and the US.
Before iPhone Pocket, there was an iPod Sock
The release of the iPhone Pocket sparked an online discussion, with users not missing the chance to ridicule the new accessory.
One of the things that netizens didn’t miss was the pocket’s price. The pocket costs three times more than the regular iPhone case.
“I got excited because I thought this was a cheap thin lightweight model of iPhone for a budget price,” wrote one user.
“I thought that at first as well. Then I saw the pocket. Then I saw the price. It has to be some kind of inside joke between some higher-up employees that we will never be in on,” shared another user.
One of the users called the new accessory “the new iPod sock,” referring to Apple’s 2004 invention, when it released a cotton knit sock for iPod, which it called iPod Socks.
The company boasts that the iPhone Pocket can be worn in many ways: “handheld, tied onto bags, or worn directly on the body.”
However, many users noted how this accessory could make it much easier for thieves to steal the device.
“London's scooter-riding phone thieves are gonna love this,” wrote one user.
“$230 to let pick pockets know you will just buy another phone when it’s gone,” added another netizen, with another one joking that perhaps it’s an idea to increase iPhone sales, “Great way to drive new iPhone sales. Make it easier to steal them!”
The pocket’s steep price may be because it was created in Japan, in collaboration with the same label that created Steve Jobs' now iconic black turtleneck.
However, this didn’t stop users from making fun of the $150 pocket.
“It reminds me of Borat’s mankini,” joked one Redditor.
“It’s a fuckin’ $230 tube-sock-sling status symbol,” added another netizen.
