There’s a reason why Apple may be ready to open its AI models to developers

Apple could be giving third-party developers access to its artificial intelligence (AI) models to boost new app creation.

The company is working on a software development kit that would allow other developers to use Apple’s large language models (LLMs) to create new AI features.

The news is expected to be officially announced during the company's annual conference, which is planned for June 9th.

With Apple Intelligence, iPhone and Mac users get text editing, image creation, and notification summary features.

Developers could implement the technology across their apps or certain features in the future.

It’s been reported that the company will first start with smaller models that run on its devices, instead of opening cloud-based AI models, first reports Bloomberg.

By opening its LLMs, the company attempts to position itself as a leader in generative AI, since it was late to the AI-release party with Apple Intelligence, which was only introduced last year.

Considering this and the fact that its AI hasn’t been used as other alternatives, the company could be expanding its technology use to developers, expecting this move to boost the rise of new applications in the store.

During the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple is expected to present new AI-driven features for iOS 19, which could include an AI-powered battery management mode for iPhones and an AI-led Health app.

Releasing Apple Intelligence wasn’t exactly smooth sailing from the beginning, as users soon noticed that one of its features, for example, AI summaries, wasn’t exactly working, prompting some users to disable the AI.

Developers could only add already existing Apple Intelligence features, such as Writing Tools, Genmoji, summaries, and similar, but they couldn’t use Apple’s main AI technology to develop their own features, making them use third-party technology instead.
