Love it or hate it, ChatGPT has an impact on our lives. So much so that it can actually save it.
Bethany Crystal, a writer at Hard Mode First, shared her experience of how ChatGPT saved her life, writing about it straight from the hospital.
The woman shared that for a while, she was sensing that something wasn’t right with her health. This feeling made Crystal see her doctor and have some tests. Initially, medics didn’t find anything too concerning, so they sent the patient home with “a few diet recommendations.”
That took place on Friday, with Crystal becoming worse on Saturday. Not being able to sleep, the woman started a conversation with ChatGPT for it to help her with some changes in her diet. The next day Crystal noticed “tiny red pinprick spots” on her leg.
The woman once again turned to an AI assistant for help, sharing images of her leg. The new information was then used to create a new diet and find vitamins that would boost her immune system.
However, Crystal still felt that something was not right. This was when ChatGPT suggested that she needed some bloodwork done. The woman then realized that she had them done and even had the lab results, which she shared with the AI.
“Your platelet count is alarmingly low. You should go to the ER urgently,” replied ChatGPT. At first, Crystal hesitated, since no one from the doctor’s office called her about something being off. Then she realized they couldn’t have because no one had seen the results.
The woman then messaged her doctor but only received an answer that she would be contacted in two to three business days.
This is when ChatGPT asked the woman if the spotting she had noticed was getting worse. Crystal then noticed that those tiny red marks were on her hands, too.
The AI once again told the woman to seek professional help immediately, also providing her with step-by-step instructions on what to do and what to tell health professionals once she got to the hospital.
Having this information at hand made the woman actually pack her bags and go to the emergency room.
In her blog post, the woman shared that ChatGPT provided her with “reassurance, patience, empathy and urgency.” She also emphasized the AI’s ability to serve as “a translator” that’s able to explain rather difficult terms in a simpler manner, providing her with understanding of how serious the situation might be but not raising panic.
The woman was glad that she had listened to the AI assistant, as it turned out that she had an alarmingly low platelet count. Platelets are blood cell fragments necessary to form clots that prevent bleeding.
The woman later found out that by the time she arrived to the hospital, she didn’t have any platelets left, which only happens in extremly rare cases.
Doctors asked Crystal what made her go to the ER, this is when she told them about ChatGPT. Surprised professionals said that this is what AI is supposed to be used for – “help people catch things early.”
After Crystal received an emergency platelet transfusion, she was kept overnight for monitoring. Even then, she didn’t stop using AI so she could understand “the endless stream of medical acronyms and data points.”
Crystal also noted how AI could help patients feel at ease, especially when medics don’t have enough time to do that themselves. The woman asked ChatGPT about her current “acuity score” and what it meant, later asking the nurse if it had been updated after receiving her latest test results.
This is what prompted the medical professional to come back to the patient and update them with the latest results.
However, not all cases of using artificial intelligence have been so successful. When it comes to work and education especially, it seems that some institutions are still trying to figure out how to take the best of AI without prompting inaccurate use or plagiarism.
Artificial intelligence has even been used to settle personal matters, as shared by an online user who felt that ChatGPT was meddling with their relationship with their girlfriend.
