LG announces the world’s first stretchable display that can expand by 50%

The new prototype display can be repeatedly stretched over 10,000 times.

South Korean company LG Display has unveiled a stretchable display that can expand up to 50%, an improvement over a previous version that was released in 2022.

LG claims that the new prototype features a 12-inch screen that can be stretched to 18 inches and has a resolution of 100 pixels per inch.

To make the current screen more stretchable than the previous one, the company improved the properties of a special silicon material substrate used in contact lenses and developed a new wiring design structure.

According to an LG press release, the screen can be repeatedly stretched over 10,000 times, maintaining clear image quality. The strengthened durability was achieved by using a micro-LED light source of up to 40μm (micrometers).

In 2022, LG released a display that could expand by over 20%. The company says that the current display's prolonged ability to expand enables various display design possibilities, raising the technology’s potential competitiveness when commercialized.

It’s unclear when the company will commercialize the new technology.

Stretchable displays are thin and lightweight and can adhere to irregularly curved surfaces like clothing and skin. They are expected to be widely applied in various industries, from fashion and wearables to mobility.
