Nvidia’s latest graphics driver has been causing issues for GeForce GPU owners, who are reporting a bug that makes the screen flicker.
The problem has been caused by Nvidia’s latest Game Ready Driver version 616.56, which was updated at the end of August.
X user Renan Maniero shared that he noticed “flickering on the monitor with driver 616.56, sometimes the Windows taskbar also gets distorted colors and returns to normal after a few seconds.”
It’s been reported that the screen briefly flashes in black and white.
This has been noticed while playing certain games, such as The Last of Us and Minecraft, and while browsing and playing YouTube videos, according to TechRadar.
Nvidia is aware of the problem
The X user later wrote an update, stating that Nvidia is already aware of the issue and is now “testing a fix for the flickering issue.”
Maniero shared that during his testing, he noticed the flashes occurred when monitors were set to 8-bit mode.
“Switching to 10bpc or enabling Windows ACM stops it,” said the post.
Users online shared other possible solutions. One such option is to revert to the previous version 610.88, or switch from DisplayPort to an HDMI connector, and disable Multi-Plane Overlay (MPO) in Windows 11.

Who is to blame?
“It used to be pretty rare to see widespread issues with Nvidia drivers. Now it almost seems expected with each new driver update,” wrote one Redditor.
More users have noticed recent issues with graphics drivers.
“I don't ever remember having a driver issue with my 980ti. Used it for almost 8 years. My 7900xtx didn't have issues for 3 years. The drivers this year, though,” added another user, questioning whether the issues are related to AMD and Nvidia and not Windows 11.

More users were also keen on blaming Windows 11.
“Chances are it's Windows. Windows loves f***ing with their updates. I have to permanently strip that s**t out every time and keep it off unless I absolutely have to update,” shared one netizen.
“These days, I only update my drivers if I really need to for a new game. It's basically a coin flip what you're gonna get,” wrote another Redditor.
