Western intelligence agencies believe that Russia is developing an anti-satellite weapon that would specifically target Elon Musk’s Starlink.
The so-called “zone-effect” weapon could flood Starlink orbits with hundreds of thousands of high-density pellets, according to intelligence reports from two NATO countries, seen by the Associated Press.
The weapon, which could potentially disable multiple satellites at once, is aimed at reducing Western space superiority.
Starlink, engineered by Musk’s company, SpaceX, has become crucial for ensuring Ukraine's connectivity since Russia launched its invasion of the country in 2022.
The technology has been applied in the battlefield, including for drone operations and intelligence gathering.
The New York Times reported last year that Moscow was testing an electronic weapons system capable of interfering with and disrupting Starlink’s satellite internet service in Ukraine.
Although selling Starlink equipment to Russia is prohibited under US sanctions, Moscow is thought to buy its terminals on the black market.
