If managed correctly, AI can be useful in ensuring that patients don’t run out of medication and leave doctors more time to care for them, according to the state.
Utah has become the first state to utilize AI in renewing its residents' prescriptions.
The state partnered with Doctronic, an AI health platform, to make it easier for patients with chronic conditions to renew their prescriptions more quickly and easily.
Considering that around 80% of all medical services involve prescription renewals, the state of Utah, in collaboration with Doctronic, is set to test whether AI can help address issues such as prescription accessibility and delays, which could lead to medication deviation from intended use.
This makes Doctronic the first program that is approved by the state, allowing AI “to legally participate in medical decision-making for prescription renewals,” states Utah’s Department of Commerce.
The new type of prescription system will be monitored by the state, which will evaluate “the platform’s clinical safety protocols, patient experience, and real-world effectiveness.”
By implementing an AI-based platform, the state intends to demonstrate that, when properly governed, AI can help reduce unnecessary hospital visits, lower healthcare spending, and enable doctors to focus on patient care.

With Doctronic’s AI, patients can manage and renew their prescriptions at any time, and it only takes them a minute to do so. This also makes doctors’ work easier since they don’t have to deal with administrative tasks.
With the new AI-powered system currently in test mode, data on mediation refill timeliness, patient feedback, workflow, and costs are being tracked to provide insights that will be shared publicly in the future.
